Depends on how you look at the question. if you are talking about the best program to design in based off the industry standards (Standards meaning that the majority of people are familiar with the format & software) then you'll probably find yourself leaning towards Adobe & Corel software's.

However, if you are talking about the best program to design with based on the individual designer, well, then you really can't say because each designer is different & has a different set of tools that they prefer.

Myself, whilst I do own the Adobe Cs3 Suite (Photoshop / Dreamweaver / Illustrator / Fireworks) & Coreldraw, I barely ever use them at all. My primary Vector software used every day along with a graphics tablet is Serif DrawPlus X3 which also works with layered Adobe formats (.Ai / .Eps / .Pdf / .swf) & many others. It's got an easy to use interface & packed with tools that take 3 or more adobe products to handle. I can do vector / paint / raster / Flash (as2-as3) / gif animation / Pdf creating - editing / maps / charts / image slicing / hot spotting / export html for web / CAD / & Much, Much more all in one software. (Note, I've also been a loyal serif software user for 5+ years though).

so, in answer to your question from my personal experience, Adobe / corel as industry standards & serif DrawPlus X3 as the Best design software for me.

One thing to always keep in mind is: "Anyone can learn to use a design software, however creativity comes from within, without creativity all you have is a software taking up Hard drive space" ~By Eric Lyon

    Photoshop does not support vector

    Dear Friend,

Photoshop is a tool to create raster images. It does not create vector images.

    thanks

If you know how to use them, Flash and even Photoshop can produce some very usable vector output.

    ADOBE vs COREL

    I totally agree w/you Sep,
I have used Adobe Illustrator and COREL Draw for vector designing and I have liked both ... but being honest: COREL programs consumes a lot more memory than Adobe counterparts ... so, try'em by yourselves and master anyone .. only the practice will show you the final answer.

    Best regards.

PS: I still use COREL Draw X4 & COREL Photopaint X4 regularly because of its toolbars disposition and interface. :-) even when I have to restart the program to release some resources eventually.

Illustrator is a better tool for web design then photoshop. Especially cs4, the multiple art boards help a lot. Also ai produces a very clean and modern website that is super easy to edit. It is easier to control gradients and it has alot more text editing capabilities such as paragraph styles which can eventually be turned to css. Also the smart guides and snap to point help with positioning and the vector editing tools are much more advanced then fireworks or photoshop.

    I use this work flow.

Create the site in illustrator, open it with fireworks to optimize graphics and make slices. Then use dream weaver to put it all together all over again using the ai template and fireworks image exports.

Photoshop is only good for photo retouching, people have to stop using it for things like websites, logos, layouts. You are only giving yourself a crutch and turning a 5 min edit into a hour job.

I use Photoshop to start almost everything. With a Wacom it's just like drawnng by hand now. I the last 3 years I have been doing a lot of my finished work in Illustrator. It's vector so I can change the size of things without losing quality. Example: I do work for a heater company. I did there original logo 4 years ago in Photoshop. I have used the logo probably 30-40 times for different things. Last summer they wanted me to design a banner. I went to resize the logo in photoshop to put on a 4X6 foot banner and as we all know it looked awful. I recreated it in Illustrator now I can do that resizing and I don't lose the quality.

I use the CS4 Extended package a lot, but I am always learning more programs for 3d, presentations, web design, etc. You can never know too much and it helps you find more solutions than just know 2 or 3 programs well.

It depend of the Work you do, for instance I work as a web designer, Adobe Photoshop is your Main tool, you can even design a website on PS and slice it with Adobe Image Ready and here you go. And when it comes with Brochures, Logos. I suggest Both, Illustrator and PS, you can even work with both Illustrator and Photoshop for creating brochure. Making the layout in Photoshop and import your artwork from Illustrator.

If you into Flash, then Swift 3D is your Guy! Draw your Vector arts in Illustrator and import it in Swift 3D to have a 3D animated shape.
    Hope this useful.

    Good-luck
