ya illustrator is on its way to becoming the standard. if u dont know it already, i would get to, because adobe is working on squashing all of the alternatives.

I would definitely agree that vector graphics are becoming much more popular due to their comparatively minuscule file size versus raster images. I, however, don't believe that Illustrator alone will be the only program to make vector graphics in 3 or 4 years from now. If you know how to use them, Flash and even Photoshop can produce some very usable vector output.

Comparing the three - Illustrator, Flash, and Photoshop - I would say that Illustrator is the most powerful for vector design. Flash is a close second For HTML-based web design, I wouldn't use anything other than Photoshop. For rich, highly animated sites probably Flash.

Fireworks is great for webdesign, especially CS4, it has a lot of tools that makes your workflow easier , because it's hybrid and understands vector/raster. Photoshop is great for photo manipulations, painbrushing, and raster-painting oriented tasks, but in web design i believe that Fireworks is better.

For me, I work extensively with adobe products >> Illustrator for vector graphics, Photoshop for web layouts and print work, and Dreamweaver for css/html.

Some people prefer Corel products so its personal preference and familiarity.

You can use the basic notepad for editing html files but you'll work more efficiently with a dedicated software like dreamweaver because it color codes, provides you with a preloaded list of codes and other goodies to help you fast track your coding. I've used other freeware like coffee cup html editor, but dreamweaver is one of the best out there. It may cost a little bit of money but its a worth while investment.

There is no "best" software per se, just personal preferences.

I think adobe products are standard. Someone said that it takes more than a life to discover all functions of Photoshop ...

    An old question

the best program is your human brain :-P

I just got a car design for a major event, from an old fart that did it in Microsoft power point :-O However it is only goof for computer monitor viewing and not reproductions.

It was surprisingly good. there are many new open source programs coming along as well..... Gimp, inkscape etc.

you do need a Vector or post script program and a bit-map or raster one....

Adobe invented the post script language that allowed graphics for reproductions to be done on a personal computer. Between Illustrator and photoshop you can create flash, animation, websites and more.

Corel is a good program too. it's not about the software!

there are standards for file formats..... but you can draw and paint on paper and scan it if you like.

if you want to work in the industry, say a printer or advertising agency or graphic design and website firm.. you'll need to know how to use Adobe software.

here's how i do it for web graphics:

Illustrator: usually start everything in illustrator -- though probably due to my comfortability level since i'm usually doing logos. starting everything here keeps thing easily scalable and flexible.

Photoshop -- for finishing touches (highlights, ehancements and anything else that can't be accomplished in illustrator

Fireworks -- i actually use this often for quick image editing, sizing, file format changes
I don't really use any of the built in graphics to html options in fireworks

For a lot of years (10 more or less) did use Macromedia/Adobe flash only.
I did use to draw covers, comics, make illustrations, logos, animations, designs, etc....

I think is a good software (the best? I don't know)
