    Pretty Squigly lines?

Yet another question. Do any of you design things like...

    found at http://www.graphic-exchange.com/00perso.htm

Where the sam heck would you begin? I cant even possibly imagine or think up a design like that! Do you hand draw it on paper first or just start drawing on the tablet. Or do you take different shapes etc and put it all together! Some one care to help me out?

(Oh and i promise to post a helpful post for others soon. Sorry i havent posted one yet or been around much i got busy last week)

When you download (after purchase) those files, they are vector files - no need to redraw. The fonts are usable as vector artwork too if you outline them.

If you are not working in a vector illustration program - this might not make any sense to you.

I use Illustrator to create pieces such as the one you presented. Others here can tell you about alternate applications to work in.

Sorry - I somehow misunderstood your reply. Goodness.

I have lots of books that - should i want or need to design each piece of such a design and NOT use stock art - i use as reference to gain inspiration, ideas for shapes and arrangement. These are a few:

    http://www.amazon.com/Decorative-Orn...5463732&sr=1-2

    http://www.amazon.com/Baroque-Orname...5463945&sr=1-1

    http://www.amazon.com/Nouveau-Patter...5463994&sr=1-5

    http://www.amazon.com/Treasury-Nouve...5463994&sr=1-6

    http://www.amazon.com/Treasury-Japan...5464058&sr=1-5

    http://www.amazon.com/100-Designs-Mo...5464150&sr=1-1

My library of such books in decent. I *never* pay full price - I frequent used book stores and thrift stores and discover all kinds of book that help me, inspire me.

It depends on what you're interested in I guess. If you like making compositions using the different images, then you can always download the stock art. There's nothing wrong with doing that as long as you stay within the license agreement for the site you download from.

If, on the other hand, you're interested in actually creating those patterns, then of course you can make your own. It takes a bit of practice (those books are a good start) but it's kind of fun and almost mesmerizing once you get going.

I don't think I know of many people who make custom images for each composition, though. That would probably be too inefficient; especially when starting out. Although I'm sure some people probably create their own motifs and use them later on when they need them.

great thread, I've always wondered this myself. I could never really figure out because I thought most of them were purely created from scratch. Didn't think of compiling images

Many of those elements are scans from books and then vectorized, then transformed, scaled, etc. Some of the designs are then transformed into brushes, and I think you know you can do ALOT with some good brushes. They usually work in layers: starting from the background, working their way up.
