Starting own Web Design Small Business.

    Hi everybody,
I am planning to start my own web developing business. First, I will be starting off at home and then seeing how it goes and will decide to take it to a bigger level. Keeping in mind the present scenario, web designing and internet based business are proving to be one of the most profitable businesses, but having said that it’s important here to deliver the best. I just want to get as much information as I can and tips before really getting into it. I am planning to start with one or two small projects and then thinking of expanding my business when having enough of work and resource. What do you people think on that?

I assume that you are a designer.

The most important thing being in this business is delivering what you promise. Delivering quality work and delivering it on time.

Be up to date with the latest technologies and design trends.

    Be innovative.

    Creativity of course.

If you're planning to outsource, get a quality programmer and css/html coder, it goes a long way.

First of all are you still a student or do you work for a big company. I advice you to make sure to have a steady flow of clients and don't think just having a website would give you clients.

    Hi!

I did the same about 5-7 years ago. I had only one customer for a short period, and then nothing. Well it was my fault. I didn't advertise myself. I was just waiting, that the customers will find me somehow... But I had to pay taxes and I had to live. I lived up all of my savings... And I had to find something else.
But about 3 years ago I a bigger company was looking for a freelancer. They "hired" me. They became a regular customer. And through my friends and family other companies found me. And they were satisfied with my works so they suggested me to others. And my business started to work and it started to make more and more money! And since then I'm working from home, doing my own business!
So I think it's up to You and your luck! If you are good and you love what you are doing just try to make it work and don't give up!

i think the most important things to remember when starting any business is, to sell yourself - if you don't believe in your work, no-one else will. stay on top of technology and always deliver exactly what you promise. your reputation is only as good as you last project.

    Best of luck anyway

I have been doing a lot of freelance work since i got out of school and am now starting my own web thing. It starts off slow but it will eventually speed up. It all takes time and like ronin said you have to sell your self. Unfortunately jobs dont fall into your lap that often..

I agree with Ronin as well. I have always believed in the saying, "If it's meant to be, it's up to me." If you work really hard and put yourself out there so potential customers notice you, I'm sure you will be successful in the long run. Good luck!

Before starting a business, I suggest that you test the "market" by doing some freelance work, finding clients either on the internet, either at home. This way you'll be able to also build a portfolio. If this thing is profitable, then you can think about starting a real "business". It's difficult to find clients when you have no previous work to show them. Running a web design business is not only about web design skills. It requires managerial skills, and many other kind of skills. The main idea here is to carefully plan every step, being sure that you're not investing money for nothing, because as Maja told us, you can lose your hard earned money, if you're not careful.
Try to earn some clients as a freelancer, and when you have enough, you can start a business.
