    Indesign Question

Does anyone know if you can just change the leading between paragraphs as opposed to changing the leading of the entire body of the paragraphs?

    InDesign CS4 Answer:
Yes you can actually. Say you have 4 lines of type and you want to adjust the leading for the 2nd and 3rd line. Just highlight the 3rd line and enter a value for the leading. It then creates the leading above the selected line.

Sorry I guess I should have been a little more specific. That works great for one or two paragraphs but that's a lot of work to do for multiple pages of paragraphs. I was wondering if there was style sheet function or something that you could state the leading between paragraphs only for a whole bunch of text.

Ahh, ok - I got you. So I'm assuming you have like 53 paragraphs and want to adjust the leading between each paragraph and not the leading between the sentences in the paragraph?

If so... wow, I'm 99% positive you can do it with an XML setup. As most Adobe products use XML and/or ActionScript of some calibur. I have a friend who is a certified instructor with InDesign - I'll ask him.

Pretty much that is the situation. Thanks for checking with your friend for me. I think it would come in handy alot to know how to do it.

unless I'm misunderstanding, it's REALLY easy. Just open the Paragraph tab and set the "Space After" to whatever you want it to be (I think it's the 2nd or 3rd box down on the right side. )

You can also set it in your paragraph style sheet under Indents & Spacing

I was going to suggest what jerct advised... there's also "Space Before", settings which work the same way, but in some layouts is a better choice.

If you have a document of any significant length, it makes sense to create Style Sheets. That way, making one small tweak to the style sheet changes every instance in the document, very quickly and easily. Of course, if you're working with spacing issues (as opposed to font variations, for example), you'll still want to double check that each page is spaced correctly after making style sheet changes (i.e. if you bump up the leading from 12 to 15 pt, you could end up with one sentence being pushed to the top of the following page).
