web design program? what do you use??

I was wondering what programs you use or would like to use for designing web sites?
I want to start making some sites and need to practice. I know HTML but that's about it. I have Indesign and dreamweaver but haven't really used it.

I'll be searching around in the mean time.

I am a novice when it comes to web design and its software, but I like Dreamweaver. It is a pretty straight forward program. I build my sites in photoshop, make a couple of flash elements and put it all together in Dreamweaver. How would you use Indesign in web design?

InDesign is a publishing software great for print and digital publishing like with the Adobe Flash Player or exporting PDF files. You can really do a lot with it. AdobeTV has some great tuts.

For creating web layouts there are a number of programs out there you can use. Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Fireworks, CorelDraw....

I use Photoshop and Illustrator the most. Photoshop mostly for web design and Illustrator for Logos and Illustrations.

I do all my graphics in Photoshop CS4. There is a reason it's the industry standard. And since Adobe purchased Macromedia - the integration between Dreamweaver CS4 and Photoshop CS4 is unprecidented. However, Dreamweaver is a strong WYSIWYG GUI based program. Having Dreamweaver (and most ppl will agree with this) doesn't mean you shouldn't learn a web developer language such as ASP.NET or PHP.
Think outside the box? Well that's my problem I coulda swore it was a sphere.

looks like I have ALOT of reading to do.
So when using photoshop for the webpage, you just design the look you want and incorporate it to DreamWeaver? what my first thoughts were..
I have CS3 will it make a difference then the CS4 version?

Thank you all for your assistance.

    Time to read some tutorials.

For web page creations - the differences between CS3and CS4 are minute. Heck, you could use just plain 'ol CS and still do a fantastic job. Pretty much you design the site in Photoshop, use the slice tool to break up the image into smalle rones. Never done it that way just cuz it's not a personal preference.

    thanks for the feedback/help.
Looks like I'll be doing the images in Illustrator and photoshop, then build the site/pages in dreamweaver.
Everything I've read about designing the page in photoshop is that I'll end up chopping it up, sounds easier just to design the elements (ill/phs) and have it all in a folder and make it/put it togeather in dreamweaver. till I learn some more coding..

I use Dreamweaver and am very happy with it, however, as ipshwitz said it's good to learn other language as well. I also use Photoshop CS3, with experience in CS4, but primarily use Fireworks with Dreamweaver...

Dreamweaver, also Coda is pretty good. I use Photoshop or Illustrator to make my slices, I dont have fireworks anymore, but that is supposedly the best program for making slices.

Illustrator for creating graphics, Photoshop for image editing and building layouts, Flash for... well... flash! Premiere for video editing, 3ds Max or Maya for 3D modelling, Director for CD roms.

I also use Dreamweaver but only because I'm used to the colour coding and it closes tags for me which saves time, but it's really too bulky a program for coding and I know I shouldn't use it. UltraEdit is a much more lightweight alternative.

You don't have to 'chop' it up as such. If you create the layout as you want it to look in Photoshop, and keep all the elements in separate layers.

I use Visual Studio for C# websites and Dreamweaver for anything I do in PHP. You can make a website in anything, even notepad, so it doesn't matter that much what program you use as long as you know HTML, I think.

Dreamweaver / Fireworks / Illustrator here.
I use Photoshop only if I need an intensive photo work for the website, e.g. very fine crop jobs, filtering etc.
