OK so I've put this off long enough.. What's that you ask?

Answer: Making my own portfolio website. reserved url-coysdesign.com.. LOL instead of photobucket or designed.nu | new in logo design and identity, great designs for your inspiration, creative portfolios and more

So I like to make logo's and illustrations for the most part and although I've taken an HTML class, I don't design webpages right now.
I wanted to explore what went into a portfolio site. this information could be used for anyone that wants to display their work. photography, graphics, paintings, and so on.

So I did what I do and googled it.. "creating a great portfolio site"

Although some of the tips have been hit on allready this is more towards your website portfolio. Or as they say your online personality/persona.

I found this. 12 tips for creating a great portfolio site - 12 Tips for Creating a Great Portfolio Site - Noupe

here is another good artical I've found. Kind of an employers view.
Digital Web Magazine - Creating The Perfect Portfolio

This is just a start as I plan to read what type of coding and so forth is best used to present pictures/images of work. I'll also search DC to see what helpful information we have allready and link it in here.

Thanks, Tsmith for your post. However, I thought that or as i heard from some developers, using CMS utilities, by individuals or companies gives the indication that they are not capable of developing their own systems. consequently, this may show a lake of a real pro experience.
is this true? or it depends?

    Portfolio?? URL(S)

I have a few places where my artwork / designs are...can the portfolio be in more than one place to be considered as an elite designer?? ie: I have some logo designs in MySpace, and another MySpace with Artwork, some in Photobucket, and Ive posted some in my photo albums here on DC?

Think of it this way. If you came to me looking for a job..
So you give me your resume and even though I havent seen your work yet asked you to come in for an interview. during the interview I asked ifyou had a portfolio for me to see or a link to your portfolio and we'll go over it.
Well you tell me to go here, click here then go to this one and then over to that other one... I as an employer would think this person isn't professional, organized, unprepared and isn't ready for a position such as this.

Now with that thought what do you think would be the best option for you?

Also if you were trying to freelance would you tell people to check out these four different sites to look at your stuff? I'd really hope not.

I'd suggest you find a site that hosts images any site, free websites, flickr, photobucket whatever. I used photobucket and set up a page(folder?) to be just my portfolio work so when I linked it to someone they go straight there don't see any popups and can just look at my work.

What is the reason people prefer to use free hosts? Isn't it more professional to host your own? Most hosting sites are only like 50-75 bucks for the year. I feel like if a someone seeking a designer was looking at a free hosted site vs a paid hosted fully customize site, they would be more interested. I may be wrong however!

If you're not into creating your own portfolio, you can always use something like CarbonMade.com. It's a great service, there's a free plan, and it looks pretty good.

There are also dozens of Wordpress Themes which are created specifically to be used as portfolios. There are some great ones out there, also free!
