WEB HOST?? A place to start

I was looking for a Web Host for a customer and my self. I’ve used 1&1 before and they weren’t too bad, although I did have a few minor issues that was fixed quickly but thought I could find a better or less expensive host.
Started looking around (googling) and I’ve done some “quick” reading or over viewing what they have to offer.
After chatting with Max @ Justhost.com I may start with them on a month to month, but to get their best rate you have to pay up front for 24 months, right now it’s at $3.95 a month.
Keep in mind that you need to do your own homework and figure out what best works for you. For my customer $94.80 for 2 years is doable so he doesn’t have the head ace of renewing anything or worry about it. For me a month to month is what I’m after (just in case I want out to try another).
I did search but the best one I found was from 2003-2004.

First I googled Top 10 hosting sites.

I'd like to know if anyone has a good host that can shead light onto us or that may have had a bad experiance with a site we should steer clear of. or just comment.

I'd like to change this to "our" top ten list perhaps.

I think personal experience is best, so for me, I've had a few domains and all I've gotten throught ICD Soft. I researched them years ago and they had the least (if any at all) down time, with crazy tons of servers backing up your junk all the time.

Every SINGLE time I've ever had a question, I heard back from them in around 5 minutes. They're top notch in my book.

    icdsoft.com

Me and my husband have publishing companies and businesses that deal with us, fairly important, and never had issues whatsoever. These days it's hard to find reliable anything or customer service and I recommend them.

I've heard very good things about 1&1, and they are relatively inexpensive (the cheapest I've found). Sometimes personal experience is the best route to go.

it depends what you need the site to do, i would say go for big names caus they are quick to resolve server issues and they occur less frequent...they back up more often and they offer more for less...i am in the uk and host my sites on hostpapa which to my understanding is relatively small but they offer what i need at a competitive price.

what kind of traffic do they expect?

    Peace

Definitely Hostgator is an awesome hosting service. The servers are always up and I love the live chat feature for customer service. They have never failed me. I like them most because they are super reliable and when you run a blog or an ecommerce site this is key. They offer some of the best values and I happen to be a reseller as well. This way you can offer your clients web hosting on your own servers.

Or you could go the other route and try out HostNine. They offer unlimited bandwidth and disk space which is hard to argue with. You may have separate sites within your account but they are all under the guise of one account, therefore each site will not have its own control panel.

    Hope this helps!

I've been using DreamHost for years. I think the value is excellent and the customer service is prompt.

I'm currently using Apthost, so far so good, minimal downtimes, lets see in the coming months if they hold up, they have this cool VPS hosting plan, its like a dedicated host but at a fraction of the price, since we have a lot of sites, it was worth a try. Previous host was Site5, had a really bad experience with this hosting site since the ownership change...

Money! I have used so many hosts and all provided relatively the same experience. 1&1 was good, Dreamhost was good.

However, I have been using Branzone.com - Game Servers, Ventrilo Servers, Teamspeak Servers, Web Hosting quite some time now for myself and my clients.

The owner came from an old gaming community I used to be involved in. He gradually got more and more popular and now he has incredible deals for people from the community. Awesome service and incredibly fast response time on issues.

OK so what type of space would one need for hosting. 1gb, 5, 10 20........
some of the plans are inexpensive but the amount of space it limited.

For the new designers getting ready to post up their work on their own site what are some of the things you look for for a great host site?

I personally use Yahoo! for web hosting. I went with them because they do offer unlimited space and you can register your domain name and host all in one spot. It also kind of depends on whether you are building your own site and if you know anything about web design. Many hosting companies have online web site builder tools that you can use to design your site if you don't have a web design program or don't want to pay someone to do it for you. My plan with Yahoo! costs me $120 per year (including the domain name renewal)

I guess it depends on if you will want to host more than one site.
I use 1&1 which I have had no problems. They even sell domains right from your account at a very good price.
I also use hostingzoom.com. I have been using them for 6 years. They started out with some early downtime issues, but for the last 4 years they have been great. I also have a reseller account with a division of hostingzoom called resellerzoom.com. I have had an account with them also for over 5 years and have had very good service.
With so many suggestions it will be hard to decide. Best bet is do a search and see what kind of rating they have from users.
    Good Luck!

    Wink

All hosting companies pretty much offer the same deal, give or take a few GB's of space here and there. I have used site5.com's reseller account for 6 years now. Their reseller plans are transparent to your clients down to the NS server names. Their prices are very reasonable too. What is important is the level of support. Their supports is extremely knowledgeable, fast and friendly. Requests are being answered within 5 minutes via email. If solution is not found it is escalated to level III and for the past 6 years I have yet to encounter an issue that wasn't resolved in a timely manner.

Just wanted to add my $0.02
