design "fight" ever hear of it?

looking around and came across this site. Rotten Apple Fight
basically you meet at a place and have 25 minutes to design something based on a subject predetermined. you have 5 minutest to find a computer w/ ps and ill. 20 minutes to design. ?
this is based in Seattle a little to far for me to drive just for a 25 minute challege and no pay.
But was wondering if any of you have ever heard of such a thing?

    found a tesser LOL http://www.vimeo.com/3404800

that seems like a lot of work/effort/planning for not much result. I mean, I get the competition aspect - I know some guys that would dig that...not for me, I guess. I guess I've never really considered super tight deadlines a good/fun thing!

I'd be interested to see the pieces, though.

Haha, I'm glad that Wordpress shows incoming links. It's cool that our project is already being discussed at other forums. And from the looks of it, on our launch day! Oh the power of the internet.

This project was created for people like myself who design things just for kicks. I know on occasion I've gone and completely redesigned a major company's site just because I wanted something to do. It's nice to design for yourself and not for a client sometimes. This is a chance to do just that.

No, we won't pay you, and we shouldn't have to. If you don't have the drive and passion to just design on a whim then you should pick another field that interests you more. However, yes, there will be prizes. As it says on our website we're currently doing test rounds. As soon as we're established we'll be holding more solid events where there will be prizes from some major retail companies. Right now we need the support of a handful of designers so that we can get off the ground and get this project moving. We are also slowly expanding down the coast and across the country, so not long from now you'll be able to compete in whichever major city is closest to you.

Coy, if you're in the Washington area why not give it a try? I'd be more than happy to see you come and compete with us

Yep, we have a few fights scheduled, so I'll keep you guys posted on how things go! The voting for the pieces is completely community based, so we post the finished battle pieces right to the front page for folks to vote on.

I'm in Oly and with my schedual wouldn't be able to make it to seattle unless its a weekend or something. But will be watching to see how it progresses.

I may be able to assist with some sort of prizes though, given enough time. Just PM what you might like to use or have as a prize and I'll see what I can do.
I like assisting in things that are different.

Okay, cool. I'd love to hear what you have to offer in the way of prizes. Shoot me an e-mail? (my address is plastered all over our site)

This sounds like a really good way to challenge yourself, with the pressure on. Some of my best work comes out when I have little time to do something.

Hey Stacia, I'm glad you like the idea!

(quick response, I know. I'm in my office and the e-mail about the thread subscription just popped up.)

Since I'm here, I'll spill the beans on the new edition to our site currently under development. You guys will be the first to hear of it.

At this moment we find it important to make this project national. We are implementing and alpha testing a RAF social network, which gives a portfolio section, blog, forums, and stats (wins/losses) for everyone that signs up. There will also be a section for rules and regulations, where we outline everything you need to know about conducting your own fight. A 10 page hard copy edition of this information is also in development, called "The RAF Fighter's Toolkit" and will also include resources that can be used during competition.

We also plan to take this on the road to venues around the US, so keep an eye peeled.

I'll be back to post when we have the beta up, which should be in the next week or two. Anyone from this forum that wants to try it out is welcome to do so.

    Exactly!
Pressure is one of the best fuel for some people.

    Listen to this:
Ken Okuyama, world famous car designer, visits Ferrari with his colleague to make a presentation about his latest oh-so-cool design, which he was working long time. Because the design was so good, and he worked on it long time, he was pretty confident that they will buy it.

Anyway, they go and meet the Ferrari representative. But after looking at the design, the rep. says: "Are you kidding me? Is that the best you can do? I cannot take this to my boss, let alone using it for production! Please leave now!".

Colleague tells to Ken to leave the room and come up with a new design ASAP, and he will try to hold the rep. guy for another 15-20 minutes.

Guess what? This car is designed in 15 minutes, and that is real.

Wow, that is crazy that a car can be designed in 15 minutes. You have to wonder if he had some other concept in his head before prior to the meeting...but I guess some people really do excel under pressure.

I saw a video of an event like this. It was the first time I saw a Wacom tablet. Those guys worked so fast - and did some amazing work considering the pressure.

I know it's not for everyone, but this sounds like something I'd be willing to try! Like Stacia90, sometimes I work best under pressure. Working at an under-staffed nonprofit, I tend to get a lot of last-minute requests :P

I hope it isn't against the rules to bump incredibly old threads, but I promised that I would give you guys updates first so I'm sticking to it!

Since attending and being featured at Startup Weekend over at the Microsoft campus, we have completely rebranded our project. We are now known as World's Best Designer (aka WBD, Worlds Best Designer) and have taken our competitions to an online environment. The format stays the same - 20 minutes to complete a piece from a prompt. Our application will place you with another competitor in your selected skill level in a matchmaking Xbox Live-like system, and the competition will be screencasted live. We have other things up our sleeves, but I don't want to give it all away just yet

We are also pursuing live events to be started in the Seattle area, and from that take the whole thing on tour.

Invites for our online app will be handed out as soon as we go into beta, and I'll be back to take requests for them and answer any questions. We would love to have a handful of design pros such as yourselves test this out so don't be afraid to sign up for our updates as those who do will probably get invites first.

Thanks for all your previous feedback guys, it really helps!

I believe you'd take your laptop w/ you to a location. But now it looks like it's going to be online..

And I can draw images in Word quite well actually it just doesn't save as a vector.
