    Usage

Illustrator as the primary, but PhotoShop for photo editing prior to dropping anything into Illustrator. You can make some pretty decent stuff in PowerPoint and then copy it over to Illustrator as well, but that is pretty rare. I don't know about Illustrator, but you can get Gimp which is an open source version of PhotoShop, if that helps anyone.

do other people not use other programs like 'sketchup'? although not vector based you can generate some really quick and easy shapes/ideas in order to investigate your design more quickly before designing final image in illustrator.

Sketchup is not a program to make logo with it is a program to make 3d or architectural designs but not logo's.

    Hello

I would have to say illustrator, also get Cs4 version the gradient new feature is great to detail things.
No longer do you have to fight make a gradient to make it perfect.
Now you can adjust while still selecting the object, and moving the gradient or adding colors see.

Learn it and it will become your best friend in designing.

First off, Life as an artist is SO much better when you work with a grafx tablet. Invest in one...you'll love it...I have the intuos4 by wacom....there are better but I love it.

If your not working off a scanned image Autodesk Sketch Pro is a GREAT program because it is a relatively simple raster based prog w/ all the useful tools...pencil,pen,felt market, paintbrush...no effects, no vector....I use it to sketch out my pictures then copy them to Adobe Illustrator where Live trace is a cinch and usually adds a bit of stylization to my original sketch. You can then throw that image back into Sketch Pro on a different layer and continue.

For 3d stuff, 3d studio Max...for the modeling and rendering...Adobe Photoshop for texture creation...beautiful match

I'm guessing it has to be Illustrator now, with most companies, collages and universities using it, I think your best chance is to learn Illustrator, and learn it well.

In my opinion, Adobe Illustrator is the best program! I now upgraded for CS5, it has some new features that can really help and i love it!
So I recommend Adobe Illustrator CS4 or higher :P
