    Designing Fonts... any suggestions?

So I wanted to get into designing my own fonts. I did some research on google and found a few great sites to use... where they provide you with the little grid, you print it out, draw in each letter, scan it in and then pay them like $9 and you get to download your font... pretty cool i think, but I am looking for a "not so complicated" program ... preferrably free program =) that I can download to make it and save it myself as a true type font so I can bypass being charged $9... anyone know how to go about this? And, regardless if no one knows, I'd still love to share the site with you where they do charge you, but it looks so simple and great... enjoy:

I played with FontLab Studio a little bit and I really liked it. I have access to it at school but I've just checked their website, it's $649 - I didn't realize it was so expensive...
