Typography and you!

Well we all keep hearing it and everyone has their opinions about it and how it should look. "your kerning is too tight, or too loose, uneven. or the spacing looks all wrong, etc.. etc...

Well I started looking around for some information, first I searched hear and really nothing, but also didn't want to try and weed through all 143 pages for the possibility someone might have covered this allready.

So now here we are. You're reading this because you either need help with it (like I tend to) or you want to express your opinion about it.

There are some "general" type of rules or guide lines to follow, but when do we as a designer (artist) deside to break those rules or go outside the guidelines?? That could be the million dollar question, right there. Hahaha..

Anyway I'm rambling now.

I started looking a while back and found one of my old books:
Designing with Type: The Essential Guide to Typography which I posted in this Thread. with I think a link to the book.

But wanted to find some other information. There are some good tips to use and some are just good reading. Maybe this could just be a refresher for some people, but could help others.

Thanks for the info. I always agreed with the saying that "You have to know the rules before you can break them."

There are a lot of designers out there who do not understand the rules of typography. Also there are a lot of people out there who consider themselves designers just because they like to play around on the computer with color and layouts. I love to plant flowers in my flower beds but that does not make me a landscaper.

did a quick little google search about David Dabner and came up with the following.

Take a look at this great article on typography. As designers I can not stress enough how much this gives you an edge over your competition. A lot of these come into place if you customize your fonts as well. Take a look and let me know what ya think.

Personally I thought it was a veryyy interesting read. Some parts may be boring if your not that big into type though.

interesting how fundamentals apply everywhere, no matter what you are doing. I design but I am a fine art painter at heart. I paint big, textural, colorful expressionist paintings now...but I started drawing from life as a kid... very realistic illustrator and painter going thru middle and high schools and even part way into college... at every stage I learned fundamentals of design, perspective, art history, color theory and mixing, etc... I would not able to paint what I paint now with out that information and base firmly planted. even so, in trouble painting moments, I go back to fundamentals.
--- so now, i've rambled...
but I guess what I'm saying is... I agree and no matter what stage of your life or career you are in... you can always use the time to refresh yourself with basics and then get to the point where, again, you decide when and how you want to break them. i hope that made some sense to some one else.

I think these links are really good, but I have gone by feeling it. That may sound stupid, but for me it is true. Many people have asked me to teach them to be a designer and I am at a loss. These type of websites are great for people wanting to learn design, since typography can be such a big part of it.

Typography is in Czech republic very underestimated.. I hope it will be better next years because typography is something like living breakable organism.. If you let it be and don´t care about it, your design dies..

Thanks for the info, coy! I'm a fan of good typography. I agree, I think it contributes a lot to a design.
