I am my own worst client

Every once in awhile I get a client that is lets say hard to please. When I get frustrated about not getting something right for that client I think back to when I design something for myself!

I am the worst client I have ever had. I knew what I wanted but became wishy washy in what it was I wanted, I almost fired myself.

So now when I get a tough or very hard to please client I think of myself being my worst client ever.

Anyone else find it hard to design for yourself?

at times I am. I like what I do but it could be just .... that much better. And then sometimes I wonder how I pulled that off and amaze myself.

Yeah I've noticed how hard it is to design for yourself... for me its a combination of having more important (not to mention paying) work to do and not really having a crystal clear vision in mind. I mean i've been redesigning my website for months!!

ineed, designing for my own self is very hard.
my hardest project was my own business card... took me ages to get a final decision.

Yea i'd have to agree with you on that. I am constantly critiquing my own work! Even after I'm done with a particular design, i'll go back to it months later and start tweaking it. I'm never satisfied with anything lol

Agreed in the sense that I cannot sit down for a length of time and work on my OWN site. I don't like doing things for myself and I just cannot get extremely passionate about my OWN work.

I'd MUCH rather do work for a friend or client. I am currently pausing my own personal project to do a site for an artist friend and I don't regret it one bit. It is in doing work for them that I am inspired to do work for myself.

i totally understand what you mean. i'll have all these ideas and then start in photoshop and find out that either i work really well and finish it so fast, but then the next day i wake up and i'm like... what was i thinking? that is horrible! that's why i've done so many versions of my portfolio site it's like every year or twice a year i'm changing it up.

Couldn't be more right. I just recently started designing websites for clients in contests. Just to see what it is like. I designed my own photography website and it took me three weeks. I am still tweaking it. I have found that when designing sites for others that i am still the same way for them as i am for myself. So thats a good thing. But i am tired! I need to let go a little.

Everytime I decide to design something for my self, I made it sure that it be made purely simple or else I would never ever be pleased with the design, somehow when its a minimal design, I would just agree and move on.

I usually go with a minimalist design, straight to the point, to show my work for my clients. But its truly hard to be your own client, you're constantly critiquing yourself, and you don't get paid hehehehe
