Red face Designing for Shrink Wrap?!

    Hello all,

I hope someone can help me- I have a new client who would like me to design the artwork on some water bottles. They want to use shrink wrap to fix the artwork to the bottle but I've never done this- I've only done standard sticking labels and the like before.

I'd like to know how the wrapping process affects the artwork- should one compensate for the warping that will occur? The bottles will be near-round in shape so I assume there will be a lot of distortion around the top and bottom parts of the bottles. Should I somehow work out the distortion and apply it before letting it go to plates?

Here is a similar idea of what I'm talking about:

    - you can basically tear the wrap off and be left with a clear, unprinted bottle.

    Thanks a million!

maybe the procedure is something like:
    1) design for the final shape
    2) scale/compensate print for topology (if the bottle is a ball shape and the wrap is initially a cylinder which will contract in heat then you would have to 'scale up' the sides)
    3) test, test, test

If it were me I'd try to accomidate for the distortions by measuring the bottles. Where the high and low spots are going to be. I wouldn't worry too much about the smaller lines though.
    Then just test it out.

You could also just make something and see how it looks when finished, you never know what you might end up with. could be cool or crap.

    Thanks for your answers, guys

I was hoping that there's some kind of formula to use. Testing will be near-impossible; these bottles will be printed with flexographic plates and I can't have those made before having the artwork 100% done. Also, I don't have shrinkwrap lying around here to even try it in my oven at home..

I'll have to find an expert in the field.

    Thanks anyway

Just contact the company that will be doing the shrink wrap they should be able to answer your questions and what you'll need to make the design correctly..
Any crafts store should have some sort of shrink wrap.

This sounds interesting, I would like to see the finished design on the bottle. Are you talking about the stuff that shrinks in the oven like "Shrinky Dinks"

I also remeber that stuff you can get at a craft store that shrinks around something when you use a blow dryer on it.

My best advice is to consult with the print rep for the company doing the shrink wrap for your client. Most likely you will have more control than you think, but there may be some helpful information or quirks to discover. Ask questions and get the answers you need BEFORE the project goes to press!
