do you like/miss the 2-d versions of logos? it seems like every corporation has 'updated' their logos to look 3-d.

I think it depends on the company, it works for some. But the classics still work really well and if you look most of the most iconic logos of our time are timeless and not in 3-d and they are making no effort to change them.
Going 3D for an ad campaign is ok & I think that's what most the larger corporations are doing in that effect, using a 3D version for ad campaigns.. What becomes an issue are the smaller / newer companies just starting out requesting a 3D logo of the bat. I think that every company should first have a 2D vector flat logo for the majority of the branding & then venture into 3D afterwords. Besides 2D still being the most flexible & practical for all media outlets, it's just easier to go 3D from an already established 2D brand than it is from a 3D brand to a 2D version. Let's not forget that most 3D logo's look like total crap in a solid black or solid white. This being another reason for a flat 2D version.
Personally, i think a bit of embossing, is not 3d-ing your logo. I like the commercials from Dutch companies like Bol.com or KPN. AH has some hamsters, Holland has some really good 3d commercializers. GDM, i just need a bigger computer to render that stuff...I want to make stuff like that too

3D can be a nice way to spice up a logo, but I think any great logo can be simple, 2D, and work in one color lol. I guess old habits die hard. If the company had a 2D logo and made it 3D that's cool. As long as they have a 2D version too.

A lot of companies are giving their logos the "3D" feel these days with embossing and lighting and whatnot. I think this fits heavily with the recent onslaught of iconic "app-style" logos and images dominating the internet's social networking scene. Ever notice how on most major news posts or feed sites that you have the option to post it to a million other sites, and each of those has a distinctive icon? Also, just take a look at Apple's App Store. You'll see exactly what I mean.
I still prefer 2D logos. Some 3D, work perfectly on the web but when printed in 1 color, the real effect or message is gone.
My artwork is always 2D especially because i create, print, sometimes do vehicle decoration and also do some merchandising work. I start my creative process, thinking how it will look after. It must work always in every situation.
yeap@Cooking Utensil, apple killed the creative business :P if it glows, it's good, right? and if it shimmers, it's even better ... :P
seriously though - i guess that one extra dimension does help to tell the story and that's the reason why it's so popular. imagine not having 3d logos - what a flat and dull world it would be ...
I prefer 2d by far, 3d is going overboard, its a logo, not a movie poster.

completely agree. 3D has a place and is great for certain things and certain logos but as a whole 2d is more versatileand user friendly for the owner of the logo. 3D has some great qualities but with all the effects like gradients and such it makes the logo complicated. Even making 3D logos with no gradients can get complicated but I think it just adds money to the cost of printing, Instead of a 2 or 3 color logos you may end up with 5 or 6 sometimes more colors in the design

Do you need something converted to a vector ?www.ineedavector.com
A dimensional version of a logo is great - but definitely need a 2D version that also looks good. You can't engrave or etch a 3D logo and usually can't embroider it either.
All of those examples have both versions.
2D Version of Logo also good but those day maximum company use 3D logos.
I like the look of a lot of the 3D logos, but I agree that having a 2D logo and making it 3D later is a much better plan. 2D is so much easier to use if you have to put our logo on something quick. Some problems I have ran into when a client request a 3d logo is they want parts transparent and then slap the logo on a background and then call me to get help. I always tell them this before hand, but it never fails. Oh well I get to charge by the hour in most cases.
