How do you define Freelance Designer?

Is there a general term? Would be someone that gets paid to design but works on their own. What if they never got paid but still worked on their own doing contests or charity design. Would that be considered a freelancer or an amateur designer?

Hi Bright, well I am not a fan of the word "Freelance(r)" it seems cheap or someone who cannot work in proverbial office. so I have been trying to come up with a short definitive word to describe what we do that seems more professional....but so far nadda, drawing a blank, zip, ziltch.

Okay what is the definition of a professional and how can one apply it to a individual designer, if you want to come off as profession never never use the word freelancer..ever! Most individual designers market them selves as if they are a small office business even though they may work from home. The designer's web page is the best place to convey the fact one is not a "freelancer'

The dictionary defines Freelance as: Artist, writer, producer, director, or advertising person who works independently on a job-by-job basis. (Such a person is known as a free-lancer.) They don't say anything about pay, so a contest counts as far as I am concerned.

    Hi Bright

I call myself a freelancer when I visit Advertising Agencies, Marketing Companies and Printing Firms.

I use my company name when I visit direct customers.

It's all down to getting work whatever you call yourself.

    Cheers

    Hi thomasaurus

I find that a direct customer feels more comfortable with a company than a freelancer. I'm not saying this is OK, just that over the years, this is what I have found works better.

    Cheers

"A freelancer, freelance worker, or freelance is somebody who is self-employed and is not committed to a particular employer long term" a more clear definition on Wiki.

    That's an optimistic view.
