    Self taught designer

I'm a self taught designer and was wondering if there is somewhere to learn about what fonts display what types of moods or emotions. What fonts are 'cheery' and what fonts are 'serious'?

Welcome and I dont think you really need a guide for that especially can easily depict the font if they are cheery or not however a thing to look at the most of the time is if the font fits the name and the rest of the logo. Which sometimes is hard and might even force into making own font instead of using commercial fonts.

    Thanks

Thanks for replying. I stumbled on a site that was talking about mixing fonts and examples of the feeling they give. I get the easy ones like IMPACT vs EDWARDIAN SCRIPT but then there are a lot that look very much alike. I guess maybe I just need to learn by doing eh?

I came across this one. Is a bit too pragmatical but it gives a good idea of types of fonts for different situations.

Here is an Amazon link to a good book: Amazon.com: Thinking with Type: A Critical Guide for Designers, Writers, Editors, & Students…
You can find other books, even the ones I had in my graphic design classes at Amazon. Use the phrase "Typography Graphic Arts books" when looking.

When you say alike you mean Helvetica vs Arial ?

I too am self taught and while most fonts immediately convey a tone or emotion, some are more subtle. When you start working regularly with them you begin to get a good understanding of what they feel like and can add to your logo/design.
