Some good picks are "Adobe Illustrator CS Wow Book" or the one written by Lynda Weisman (didnt remember the name of it). Those are about techniques. But if you want to learn the program, read "Adobe Illustrator CS Bible".

    Illustrator books

    I have 3 books on Illustrator 10:

Teach Yourself Visually Illustrator 10 by Mike Wooldridge and Michael Toot -- This is a nice and easy introduction for beginners.

Adobe Illustrator 10 Classroom in a Book by Adobe Press -- This was used for a course I took. It is pretty good if you want to follow through on various tutorials.

Illustrator 10 Visual QuickStart Guide for Windows & Macintosh by Elaine Weinmann & Peter Lourekas -- This is good for reference after you are already somewhat familiar with Illustrator's various features.

The Lynda.com tutorials are fantastic if you can afford (or at least borrow) them

    Cool,
    thanks for that Robb.
One of those links has just solved a 6 year problem I've had!!

Occasionally in illustrator my anchor points disappear. I used to think this was a major glitch and I would dump my preferences to refresh Illustrator!!

Now I find that all I had to do was go "view/show bounding box"!!

Goddamn! I can't believe I was so stupid!
