Design Taboos
Recently I was talking to a friend who works at a design firm in Chicago. She told me her boss totally ripped into a coworker for putting a stroke on a font. I didn't realize this was such a design nono..? Just wondering if anyone out there has any other current Design Taboos they wouldn't mind sharing.

Hmm.. I think it's up to the todays "design fashion". If "gradient fill" is in the spotlight, then you use more gradient fill. I guess it's bad when you can see clearly what effects the designer used to create the design. Try not to be to "obvious" with the following: inner bevel, outer glow, inner shadow and other effects. I know I usually missuse effects like "Hey I found a new effect, "outer bevel" now I will use it to EVERYTHING!". But I would love to hear what the professionals have to say about Design Taboos

I think I would be looking for a new boss.

Depends, if the stroke was not outlined before it's final state, then that is a no no.
The proper way, however, (in my opinion) is to offset the path. Gives the same effect of the stroke, but doesn't interfere with the actual word.

All Text should be outlined or expanded. If this isn't done then The design will be a mess when scaled. Another reason to outline or exapnd the storkes and text is...the client or print company most likely doesn't have the font you used so when it is opened a substituted font is used and messes the whole design up.
Here at designcontest it is required to expand or outline all text and strokes in your final vector file

Next time
I not sure if it is a well known design taboo. But maybe your friend should take note of all her bosses dislikes
