It's funny, though... as I said. You told the specs, but still didn't say WHY Macs are better for DESIGN ;-)

But anyway. I've decided to buy a Mac to have one at home, too. But then when I added that I have to buy the system, plus all the software again that I use... No way. I just buy a really darn fast, latest, greatest PC for about half the price (monitor not included) and have all the software still that I use.

Agreed. I used PCs for 16 years, and started with DOS, and I can verify that since Steve Jobs came back to Apple and made them a great company, Macs are better for everything except gaming, and that is only limited by the Software developers, not the hardware.

Network crashing? Are you insane? Not to put too fine a point on it, but I worked for a company that for years had to use PCs for some reason, and when the network went down, constantly, the only machine that was up and running without reboot was our single Mac in the Art Dept. The MIS guys were always reminded, that a sole Mac would logon to their inferior network and not have to be treated with a reboot... Every other machine went down, and we constantly lost information..from the Blue Screen of Pain. We were using Windows 2000 as well... I thought XP was based on 2000? no?

Never again will I use a PC for work. That would be an oxymoron.

Why Macs are better in design than the pc:

1: When you open a file you don't open the real file but a fake one... a copy on your screen. Photoshop as an example: Ok so your retouching a photo, applying filters etc etc etc... you're doing this to a copy of the file... when you save... then the real file is changed. A pc opens the real file right away so it's slower.

2: Mac uses a total different language that is faster without jibberish

3: A pc makes copies as tempfiles for every little thing you do! Browsing the web, writing a letter or just opening a simple prog. So it fills up your HD and RAM with sh*t.

4: In the 7 years I've been working on a Mac I've never ever had a virus, worm, trojan, spyware etc... It's save as the crown jules!

5: Apple makes it's hardware and software... they know what software is best for the hardware and OS. No different manufactures etc... and they work together with Adobe and other software companies etc.

    6: Great support! Apple Care!

    7: What about..........*drumroll please*......calibration: Colorsync

8: No restarts after installing software! Run all the Adobe programs, listen to online radio while you work and o send an email and check the news on your web at the same time... no blue screen of death!

9: We design people love design... Apple knows this and they really design the best computers... even the inside is like diamonds... have you seen the inside of the G5???

10: Ok here's a great test! Pull the plug out know! Just rip it out of the wall........................................... ok I bet the mac users are back here quicker than the ones on a pc... safemode? crash? lost everything? still in your blue screen?

I work on both. The Mac and PC. I bought a laptop Dell so I can test my websites on different platforms and browsers. The Dell is only 6 months old and has crashed 10 times. Keeping my Dell clean costs me 20 times more time and effort than my 3 year old Imac G4. And I wont mention the stress of trying to find and delete the spyware, trojans, virusses, etc. And I only use the PC to test my own websites So no porn sites, no downloading of software etc... just browsing and testing.

But what ever you choose... the cheap way or the more expensive way... the best designer is you and not the computer you're working on. 20 years ago you would have been designing with stickon-letters and your coloringbook Anything better than that ay.

An aspect of this issue, not revealed till now, is that there are no bad Mac machines. Normaly we should compare machines of the same price and made by a well known company. Is incorect to compare a Mac with a PC made by noname firm.

Personaly I think that people are motivated to use Mac only by the PRIDE of beeing a Mac USER.

I worked on bouth and I can say that Mac was a good choose until '94-'95. After that PC started to be a serious competition. And today Mac is propety of Microsoft.

My point is that PC is the future; Or maybe another invention , but there is no future for Mac.

You obviously are drawing conclusions on your own. Microsoft does not own Macintosh. Apple computer does. No future for Mac? Well, we'll have to see about that. Mac has and will always do just fine. I've been using Mac/Apple since they came out. Today I use both platforms, so that I can test everything and make sure things look and work good on both platforms. The only real difference is interface.

First of all. Apple is in the Black, and they are not going out of business in this millenium. Microsoft does not own Apple, and now as a new Apple employee I'm happy to say, it is one of the best places I have ever worked.

OS X Tiger is the most advanced operating system in the world, and what was the name of Microsoft's latest? Longhorn? Vaporhorn? Non-existent? They must be waiting for their copy of Tiger to copy.

*This is my opinion only and not that necessarily of my employer.

PS: Apple has been supposedly going out of business for 30 years...

Is your name Paul Thurrott by chance?... (Look it up if not, as you and him would get along famously.)

There is no comparison between a PC running Windows and a Mac running Tiger.

As I sad before: you are emotional motivated.
What do you say about this:
Apple will use Intel procesors from now on.

    From: http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20050609.html

"Microsoft comes into this because Intel hates Microsoft. It hasn't always been that way, but in recent years Microsoft has abused its relationship with Intel and used AMD as a cudgel against Intel. Even worse, from Intel's standpoint Microsoft doesn't work hard enough to challenge its hardware. For Intel to keep growing, people have to replace their PCs more often and Microsoft's bloatware strategy just isn't making that happen, especially if they keep delaying Longhorn."

There is some truth in this analysis. I think that Apple is trying to enter on a larger market by the means of reducing the price for its computers. Today the cost for end user to buy Apple is not appealing compared with PC price. And, generally, both computers will do the job. We are no longer in a world of clear separation between work and fun, this two are mixed and I think that here is the market target for an Mac with Intel processor (who can run windows: entertainment).

Anyhow it is clear: the supremacy of PowerPC is no longer an option for Apple, if they wish to grow then they must adapt to market. Will see if Apple will be cheaper and with the same stability.

I do all my designing on amped up PC's as they are so much easier to do web development with. It's easier to use all the variations of browsers on a PC and I have actually found with experience that for some reason the large photomanipulations I often do run quicker on a PC than a Mac. It's also an obvious fact that the majority of net users have PC's.

Although the Mac OS is infintely more stable I prefer the fact that I can get down and dirty with my PC settings and tweak the system as much as I need to. I've always felt that Macs are only often used "because they're Macs, and they look good". Granted, they are more attractive aesthetically, but I'm still quite happy sticking with my grey PC....

What matters most is the multi-tasking speed, and efficiency. .

Well, im just working as a bullet, having photoshop and illus on, while doing some HTML, and checking email, surfing web, and i-tuning. Doing conversion of MP3 to ringtones too.... heck, then someone will chat and pass some files that i have to download. Right now im using DELL and these applications work well without crushing... am asking if someone here is using Alienware PC, how really good is it? They are proclaming to be powerful PC/Notebook ever.

This is an old topic, but I wanted to slip a quick comment in

If any of you are working in web/interface design, you should be working on BOTH platforms. The most frustrating part for myself and the other designer at work is creating W3C standards compliant HTML/CSS that works on both platforms. Other things, such as fonts and resolutions also vary drastically.

All in all, Macs are better for graphic design (no its not just a myth) because the graphics engine built into OSX surpasses the one that is built into Windows. I also find it nice when using Photoshop to be able to have the windows float rather than be contained in a giant grey box (as in the Windows version) That way I can position a possible graphic over other programs to compare, etc.

I love my dual processor Mac G5! With 180GB of HD and 2GB of RAM, it flies! AdobeCS2 runs so great on it! The Mac OS is rock solid. Starting in '06, they'll be running on Intel chips.....speed, speed speed!!! I've had a Mac for 10+ years now! Long live the king!
