    brush-style vectors

I've always wondered how to make brush-style vector logos e.g in the following logo

Is there a special way to do this, or do you simply have to draw the whole thing by hand?

In Adobe Illustrator, use your pen or paintbrush tool to make whatever shape you want. Then with your new shape selected, simply go to window > Brushes and you will find a large variety of different brush styles available.

You can also click on the little arrow in the top-right corner of the brushes window to open a variety of other brush libraries.

    Hope that helps!

In photoshop: Use Brush tool .. Customize the brush by modifying brush presets.
    1. Select Brush Tool
    2. Window > Brushes
    3. Play around whith different brushes and styles, adjust diameter, scatter, spacing, etc..

Go ahead buy Adobe Illustrator, that is the standard for doing a logo.

    Hope that helps.

I'd suggest this was worked on paper first, then scanned, and traced in Illustrator (or similar) Brushes, are useful, but rarely can they be reused well.

You can use brushes in Illustrator to do all sorts of crazy things too. Like designing a shield and then making it into a brush and putting it back on a path so you can warp and twist it. It's really a pretty powerfull tool for manipulation, once you get used to making and using them that is.

But like Ratbaggy said, the preset brushes rarely get the right effect. I've used them for comps, but final designs I've always had to redraw and trace and manipulate them over and over again to get it right.
