    Public use signs and symbols

I've always been interested in design for general public use, such as the signage in airports, traffic signs, system maps etc. These designs need to be clear, easy to understand and especially quick to interpret...quite an art form in its own right.

    Some examples:

Paul Mijksenaar's work - Dutch designer with a big reputation in the field

AIGA symbol signs - icons we all know and use

London Underground map - a design classic

    New York city subway map

I'm interested in other great examples of this "hidden in plain sight" design work...any really great work out there?

You sound like you really enjoy designing with usability in mind. I have to admint I share your passion in this, and often find myself criticizing or complimenting signs that I see.

Thanks for bringing up this topic, it is quite interesting I don't have any great examples myself but I am sure some other people do.

    Hi,
I am a stong follower of iconic design and anything that can convey things visually.

For sure you must be aware of Edward Tufte's works:

I specially like his book 'Envisioning Information'.

It has inspired me a lot.

BTW, I was at Schipol airport last month and now it feels good to know about the designer who designed those signages.
