    Monitors - CRT vs LCD

I’m sure that most of us working seriously in the design sphere are still wandering about one of the most important tools that help us in our duties and life – our close friend – “Mr. Monitor”!
I remember the time when the 17’ CRT ones came up on the market and it was such as miracle comparing it with my 15’. I dreamed to get one, so I can get the space I need to improve my design project and especially with the 3D software that separation of 4 parts of the screen is so needed.
Today we have a lot more of the CRTs – 19’, 21’, etc.
But I’m sure that most of our love to the CRT became anger when you have to move somewhere else or need more space on the desk or just to forget about the headache and the red eyes!!! Please don’t get me wrong - I love my CRT but also my health.
Browsing at a famous Tech store yesterday, I saw an incredible LCD Sony monitor and the picture quality was amazing comparing it with the rest marks around. I wanted hardly even it price was quite expensive.
I new that the CRT picture quality is better than the new LCDs but is it the situation still like that or we can (have to, must …) move to the LCD technology.
Give me some help to take my right decision. Using your experience, compare the advantages and disadvantages of both – CRT and LCD technology and give us some tips.
I’m sure that will be helpful for all of us

P.S. Actually if the admin can post a poll about it will be great

I personally prefer LCD now. There was a time when the quality and colour on an LCD screen were not that great, but now you can find some amazing monitors that work perfectly. However, I must admit that the quality of my iBook screen is quite poor.

Large CRT monitors have no purpose anymore. I use some of the high end ones at school, and to be honest my LCD at home is of much better quality.

i choose LCD as i believe they look more appealing, better styling etc and that now the image quality is high (depending on what brand you purchase). Reason for not choosing CRT is that, they are big bulky things which drive me insane and you can get LCD with equal / better quality. At the moment i use a 19inch CRT which is soon to be replaced with a 30inch LCD Ultrashap.

definitely agree with the aesthetic side of things with LCD, but for my colour and video needs they just aren't up to scratch yet (particularly for the money)

Having said that, they are getting better and better dayd by day it seems, so I'll be investing in an LCD/flat panel soon. Apple screens ROCK!!

hehe yes it rocks but it is so expensive... looking to buy a CRT from LaCie which are really good for colors and calibration and later a Mac 30 inch otherwise I would not buy LCD....

Hi, all, new here...first post i think! i am precisely going through that issue now:Whether to go for an lcd or not? i am planning to get a 17inch samsung syncmaster 713n. There are some things that bother me though..

    1. I have read that the eyestrain thing is something personal. Some people say they cannot take lcd well if they spend too much time with it as compared to (believe it or not) crt at 85Hz. Some people do not take the flourescent backlight well i guess. I cannot spend too much time on an lcd b4 i buy, but from what i have seen i cannot say what effect i would have.

    2. When i am not working on anything graphics related on my crt i turn my brightness level to something just above the minimum level so that glare is minimum. i also use a anti glare glass. Don't know how much minimum level i can get with the samsung 713n. any ideas?

    3. I have found that the native resolution 1280x1024 is a 5:4 ratio. But won't that be a problem with all content that u normally expect to view at 4:3 such as wallpapers and stuff? Can anyone using this confirm..?

    Thanx.

I stupidly Got a 21in CRT (Heaviest sucker you ever will lift) indstead of a 19in LCD (I don't know why???) and I still regret it. But soon I'm switching over to Mac and with get an Apple Lcd (I hear there excellent). My CRT is nice as far as packing crap onto screen (Flash is espescially nice for all those darn Palettes ) But in the end I really want one of those 32in LCD's ....still saving for one of those (I would really love that)

I've got a 17inch LCD and love it. LCD technology has improved greatly so most get equal or better picture quality than CRT's now.
