    Question Logo vs. Design

This is an interesting topic of discussion, IMO. Which do you think is harder, and which do you think is more fun?

Personally, I think Logo design much harder than full website design. It may be far less to have to create, but the thought behind it is incredibly difficult. Should you do a shape, a font play, something real, something fake, abstract? So much to think about. With website design you have more fixed variables. Ok, business design, professional, these colors, this inspiration. Go for it.

I also think website design is a lot more fun. You've got a large canvas, and lots of freedom to work with it. You also get to create something people will actually interact with, which I personally find more rewarding.

So, for me, Logo design is hard and boring, whereas website design is "easier" and a ton of fun.

personanally I find logo design interesting and website design a lot more technical than creative work. But I can't really explain why. There are both rules and areas of freedom for creativity in logos and websites.

However if I have to design both the logo and website, I always start with the logo and when it is accepted by the client I build the website around it. I feel that logo is the essence of the company's graphics.

Hm, that I agree with. I find it easier to design a website even if they already have a good logo.

Unfortunately I'm about to start on the hardest possible task - designing my OWN company logo & website (hopefully opening a little store here in town sometime early next year, yay.).

It's all design to me. But there is a lot more out there than just logo's and websites. Packaging, Print etc. No one particular discipline is any more challenging than the others, so long as you are coming from a concept based perspective and not relying on the rules and techniques that were successfull in the past. But you might find that if you haven't worked in a field before, then you might have trouble adapting to it. Dunno:-\

I entered design via web sites and coding, so I'm fond of designing sites. However, since then I have spent lots of time designing logo's and now I do find logo design more fun than web design.

I can't explain why - I think it allows more creativity as in many cases there needs to be some kind of abstract thinking behind a logo.

I think logo design is a lot more fun than web design, though beautiful things can be created everywhere. P= Maybe I like logo design, because I am a crappy website designer. X=

Website design is much more difficult than logo design. In main stream website design you need to account for different browser resolutions, usability, accessibility and navigational issues. All this is before any actual coding/development needs to be done.

Proper web design also involves wireframing the website/application before anything begins, numerous revisions and issues that come up once web development begins.

Anyhow, as a professional web designer/developer, I have had the opportunity to design some major web applications. Designing a blog or portfolio can often be quick, easy and fun -- but when you get into some real application and UI design things begin to get alot more difficult and time consuming.

Have to agree with the above. Personally I only worked with simple web sites which don't require any complicated integration with the backend application. This is not very complicated, but browser compatibility is still an issue.

I don't think coding should be considered in this question. I was talking only of the actual designing aspect of the two.

    And so was I

All the things I mentioned need to be considered while designing the site and before coding begins. What will it look like on an 800x600 resolution? What will it look like on a high resolution widescreen monitor? Will the position of the search box affect the usability of the site? Will having horizontal vs. vertical navigation hinder the ability for the users to find the content easily? What will the design look like if somebody increases their font size in the browser? What will all the different pages of the website look like? What will it look like on a Mac (with anti-aliased text) and on a PC (without anti-aliased text)?

Taking all these things (and more) into consideration while designing, I have had to create up to 20 different mockups for one website. This becomes particularly important when working with developers, as you need to show them every possible aspect of the website (otherwise they make decisions on their own... which can generally not turn out so nice!)

Like I said -- designing a personal portfolio or blog can be quick, simple and fun, but designing a full-fledged application or corporate website is completely different story.

    Logo design is much easier.

I was mostly referring to the comment about Browsers Compatibility. All of your points I agree with.

I think both run about even. Grasping the concept of what to design and how-so-on-an-so-forth. It takes alot to get both a web design and a logo to look "just right" for the viewers eye.

for me a logo is more difficult, yet I express myself better with it
a website design usually a fun experience, but depends on the logo colors and shapes.. if the logo is nice, then you have a great design, but if the logo is not that good it might affect the website colors or atmosphere

imho website design is much more difficult neither logo design, but it always depends of how free are you in your actions..

To me, I never had a website design job yet because I'm not good in multimedia but that isn't an excuse for me to not trying doing a website design. So I can't really tell how hard each designs would be based on its application. But I do find logo design to be relatively hard and challenging and I enjoy it anyway Radaman is right, its pretty much depends on your actions toward the designs itselfs. Hence, I find concept character illustration to be damn hard per say

Is not about how hard or funny!

Every profesional graphic designer knows that there is no funny or boring works, I think every project since a logo until a website is hard itself in its own way.

We are not artist trying to create master pieces to be shown in a gallery, people are loosing the notion of design. We are comunicators, as much as a journalist or writer, the difference is we use images, so no matter what about is the project, if you are really profesional and you love what you do the joy and fun is the same, you put the same effort and the same process in your brain to create, no matter is a logo or website.

There is no easy project, every project deserves the same effort and profesionalism, we enjoy design, no matter what about the design is.

I hate to say this but sometimes I see some logos posted in here really shamefull and low level... please colleagues try to keep the level of your own work and criteria let be honest and ask ourselves if some image, logo or design deserve to be posted.

I hope nobody feel hurt about this, is just a profesional advised from another colleage.
