HelloIt all depends where you are...I'm in Virginia(usa) and I charge $40hr, for design(which is on the lowend)......I'm from California, where I charged more($75).......

hi, thats fair enough, thanks, im in melbourne australia hehe, planning on getting back into the market, i use to charge a similar amount, hehe, thanks for your response![]()
Only if your a very known designer with a massive portfolio then you would think of charging around £30 per hour. If I ever get a job I tend to charge around £15 per hour, just remember to be honest with your hours, no one job takes 50 hours to do.
I dont work with hours. Just per project.
Webdesign (without coding): € 150 . Logo: € 75. I can make one in one hour but it can also take 4 hours.
My portfolio: http://www.colourdesign.nl
Yes it all depends on your area in which you live and also the desire of your work. You may take a general concensus of other designers in the area ..just call and ask their wage per hour. This might give you a better idea of where you stand. If you are very new to design work then of course I would expect a lower cost until you establish yourself more.....Hope that helps.![]()
Hey All, thanks alot for your input
much appreciated
it really has to be planned by considerating your
portfolio.
You cant request too much if you dont have good jobs
from the past, this is very appreciated.
Oneway or another you should not put yourself too much in a "low ray".
From 25-40€ per hour is a decent way to be payd for certain design activities(paginating, impositioning, prepair for prepress, corrections over a document), that's at least what i think.
Regarding logos...well...here it is a little bit more complicated. Depends on many factors: how many proposals(time is money), how many colors, mascots, professional, big client, small client, middle client....Anyway...the range is between 150€ - -----
It is really hard for designers especially freelancers to decide when it comes to pricing. There are alot of things to consider. The time frame of the project, complexity of the design whether if it's for web, printing, presentation, or a logo. Also, you have to consider the budget.
I ussualy do look to how much time it have taken me. If I did a logo in a hour, I would sale it for €75 and if it took 2 or more hours 100€. And Webdesign allways €130/150 because it take alot more time then a logo.
thats true, thanks agian for the advice
When it comes to budget...the whole disussion goes in another way!![]()
There are quite a few salary surveys available online. There are also charts which help you estimate your monthly living and business expenses. aiga.org has a one specific to designers in the US.
I agree, there are alot of factors when it comes to deciding an hourly rate. I tend to get lucky because of my contacts, and get rather large clients. I charge anywhere from $50-$100 an hour. A few factors i use, and already mentioned by a few others are, client budget (or how much they make anually), time frame (how fast the client wants it) and then how long it will take me.

thats cool, thansk for the site surveys, they are interesting to look at.
well ive sent off some quotes so atm im waiting to see if anyone likes them
thansk for the assistance and pointers![]()
Do you guys find that you set your prices more so by the hour or by a quote? For example, if someone asked for a flyer...would you say "that's $40 per hour" or would you say "I can do it for a total of $150?"
The reason I ask is because sometimes when I quote an hourly rate it scares the client away because they immediately think the job will take hours and hours. Granted, sometimes more complex designs do take longer than others and I try to be upfront with them and tell them approximately how many hours it will take, what factors into the time, etc. And I think my rate is pretty low for the Boston area, but I try to be competative in order to obtain more clients. But I think the problem goes back to the fact that some people want something for nothing and don't want to pay for a professional's time.
what ive been doing is quoting per hour, but i give an estimate of the total time so that they know most likely how much its going to be, this is where customer management comes into it
I like doing hourly at $40-$60 an hour. Depending on the job. I might also do flat rate work, but you have to be very specific what the flat rate is for or you will end up loseing money.

i have found a set rate to work best for my clients.
most of my them just want a site up fast and are willing to pay a reasonable amount to just get it done asap. so i will charge a basic 150-300 dollars for a basic 5 page validating site plus a rush charge of 50-100 bucks if they want it within a couple days.
of course, if they need any scripts or databases, etc the price goes up significantly.
