[photoshop] save for web -> colors desaturate

Everytime I save an image with 'save for web', I see a desaturated image in the preview pane. My colors settings are 'north america web/internet' without any altered settings. and the profile I use is 'sRGB IEC61966-2.1'.
@ save for web, there is an arrow in the right upper corner. If I use the setting 'use document color profile', then the preview looks exactly the same as the original. But when opening (preview, firefox, etc) the saved file, It's the desaturated image again.
If I use the setting 'uncompensated color' I see the actual desaturated colors. The same goes for using 'proof setup -> monitor RGB'.
It seems as if Photoshop doesn't use the right color profile, or something the other programs can't see? In photoshop the colors ARE the way I want it..

I have a Macbook pro, photoshop cs3 and all the other updates.

I've uploaded a screenshot, where you see the difference between the saturated colors. I use 100% jpg, so it's not the compression.

I also made a small test with different saving settings:

    http://www.thuisgym.nl/kleur/kleur_web.png

files with the _web are saved by using 'save for web' and the others are just 'save as' files...

btw, hi, i'm new on this forum

Welcome to DC! You probably tried this already and I haven't used photoshop cs3 quite yet, but have you tried going to file > document color setup and setting to RGB? Also, try edit > mode > and check the format its set to. Check over the profile again, and try to get the file as high quality as you can without it being too large of course since its for the web.

Also, not sure if CS3 has imageready with it, but you could also try that. Imageready can work wonders sometimes.

hi apresico, thx for your reply. I already tried those settings (must say that they are in different places in cs3) and it's not working

I also made this thread at another forum, they couldn't see a difference between the 4 pictures, but when you download it, you do see the difference. It's like firefox is not picking up the color profile at all. But I read that firefox should pickup the srgb profile, so it should look the same, but in my case, it's not at all...

Also I discovered, that on my friends pc - who has a windows desktop with CRT monitor - I can't see a difference at all. So now I wonder, does it have to do with me being on a mac, or maybe because I have a LCD? Is it the monitor or the OS?

If its the monitor, I would think that everything would be reacting the same way on everything on your mac and all color would be messed up. Try this guide I found here. there is a color profile setup for the web, but at the top there is one for settings in general. Try following the basic steps for setting up calibration.

You may need to calibrate your system profile to fix the gamma/monitor calibration. I do know that this can cause different results on a pc versus a mac. If this guide doesn't help, try to google search mac photoshop color management, or producing consistent color in photoshop. This my help get you in the right direction. Let me know if it works!

Apresico, thx again for the reply and the link. I followed what is there, but the images still show color differences when using save for web.

Can i ask you for a favour? Can you see if your 'save for web' has any collor differences like http://www.thuisgym.nl/kleur.png ?

The only way, to get the color differences right is using this:
    activate view -> proof colors
view -> proof settings: monitor rgb

then it's the same for 'save for web'. But I wonder how it will be on other monitors. Because I discovered the the colors on a CRT are so much more saturized then on lcd.. I always knew and heard people complaining about this, but now I finnaly see it and understand what they're talking about all the time

Only thing I need to know if the colors display right on a lcd/tft with windows.. since both friends here got a crt on their windows pc..
