Learning some flash and actionscript

I've just started another project at work and it requires me to learn some basic flash and probably some intermediate actionscripting.

What I need to do is make a news-slide which is updatable by php (pick the five newest articles). And make a box out of it like this:

I've found a short "tutorial" on how to make a box with buttons to change the slide, but it needs to be automatic and needs to loop as well. For this I should learn some actionscripting afaik.

As I don't know anything about the level of difficoulty on this I'd happily appreciate anything that will get me started.

Does it necesary has to be flash AS, or could be done on java?

Hmm.. My boss said it should be flash, thats all.
Can you use java with flash? Or did you mean an ajax-banner?
