To make your files as compatible as possible here are a few things you can do.
Save files as EPS which can be opened over different formats and programs instead of saving it as the standard program files. And eps also can keep layers and all the basic info of either vectors or bitmaps and be easy to open and able to edit.
Save few versions older instead as the latest version. Save about 2 or 3 version older than the newest versions. It make it possible to open with older programs and edit things easier.
Why save several version older?
The thing is not everybody buys the newest program cause mostly the older version still works and some does not even need the new feature to do their work. Also allot of the programs are very expensive and it is cheaper to buy and older version or even buy a second hand. Especially printer don't buy the newest version cause they dont do design but only open the files to print.
Also making compatible its also tip for students mostly student can't get the newest versions and schools are able to get newest programs much sooner than students can download it. You would have less problem working on designs between school and home.
