Vector are lines and vertexes which an shape is made. Vertex is like a dot or end of a line. By using line to build shapes or illustrations these illustrations and design can be resized to an unlimited size without loosing details and line sharpness. While bitmap like using photoshop uses pixels which only can be resized to a certain ammount and everything will either become pixelated or blurry depending on the settings.

There are tons of info you can find on internet about this subject.

Or maybe it's because I'm lazy just waaayy too much typing! joking, really though if folks would read through our site they would find a wealth of information

Uhm saw that about.com but they really explain horrible in allot of stuff, wiki have more detailed into plus correct images showing it.

Yeah I notice allot of new people and especially people new to design re asking same stuff or asking things that designers should know.

You know Sharie DC could also start a wiki page to explain stuff how it works especially use it as a FAQ page.

Sometimes it's hard to tell vector work from raster these days. With CS5's new bristle brushes and the way some designers use gradient meshes and such, it just keeps getting harder to tell the two apart.

Basically, if it's scalable without losing quality, it's vector. This is an image made of mathematically-defined geometric shapes. If it's made of pixels, it's raster.

Hope this illustration helps: Vector Graphics and Raster Graphics Difference | Logo Design Blog

Nope ... PS is raster. Programs like Adobe Illustrator, Flash, FreeHand and Fireworks, along with CorelDRAW and Artworks ... those are all vector.

Photoshop does have vectors but its not used the same way as the other programs. You can easily make vector masking and help making a selection. Also can draw shapes with vectors in Photoshop however those vectors will be translated to bitmaps in printing cause Photoshop files are bitmap files.
