No, I don't think that would be fair to the other designers that worked hard to get theirs in by the deadline.

Blazen: Thank you for your revision, it is very good.
NoNameFace: Your design is very good as well.

I've decided to narrow the contest to my favorite two designs which were submitted by aE-COma and Axi. You both have the opportunity to refine your designs. I leave this afternoon for a three day event. I will return by Monday and make my final decision Monday PM. I can give you feedback and answer questions today and Monday AM.

I expect the winner to submit designs for all the elements listed in my original posting.

aE-COma: There isn't anything I don't like about your latest design--well I'm still not crazy about the shade of green. The integration of the content is very good. I love the frames and the entire presentation looks polished and professional. But to make a final decision, I need to see more. As mentioned before, I'd like to see a table and folder structure. A footer would be nice as well. You also mentioned submitting some new designs and a raised content area. I would consider these as well.

Axi: Your design is brilliant. I like the originality. The few things I would like to see your thoughts on would be:

    1) Thumbnail info. The thumnbail strip will be vertical, not horizontal. Placing the number and the bars above and below each other will take too much space. I'd like to see them fit side-by-side.

    2) Quality ranking bars: I understand that these fit good with the design but I'm not sure a user will intuitively understand that these are rankings. Maybe five boxes always exist and a certain number are solid to show the ranking.

    3) I would like to see your thoughts on a button design. I'll use buttons thoughout and a custom button that goes with the design would be good. I would consider using the buttons for Previous and Next as well.

Axi: If you win, I would like to see the following:
    1) Your current layout for the Home page is good.

    1a) change MOTHORCYCLE to MOTORCYCLE

1b) ORGANI-ZATIONS: I don't like this hyphenated. I would suggest deleting it or using ORGS or GROUPS in its place. I had a thought of having ORGANIZATIONS vertical and opaque in the background. Maybe that would be too busy.

1c) For the Home page, delete the current navigation status: Home/CCS/Blackhawk... It isn't necessary.

    2) A separate content page. I need a design for the page that doesn't include the ORGANIZATIONS navigation pane. Since your design is somewhat integrated with the navigation pane/bar, I would like to see your thoughts of what to do when it doesn't exist.

2a) This page will include the current navigation status in the header: Home/CCS/Blackhawk...

2b) It might be nice if this design has a more compact header image--less tall--to save space on the users' monitor.

2c) Understand that I will likely code this page so that the width will be 100 percent of the screen width. So that a user that has a wide screen can choose to see say 10 columns of thumbnails in a grid.

These are things you should consider and understand I will request that you do if you win. If you choose to do some of those for the next deadline, great that will be factored in my decision. However it isn't necessary and I don't want to waste your time if you aren't chosen as the winner.

Finally I would like to thank everyone that took the time to submit designs. I would be proud to use any one of them for my site. They all were that good. I hope I didn't offend anyone by my critiques. I can't imagine how difficult it is to pour your heart into a design and not have it chosen. Thank you.

Slider, who will be coding the design? The contest winner or you?

I will be writing the code for the site. I see in your normal deliverables that you include a PhotoShop file and an HTML file. That's great. If you want to translate the main page and content page into HTML, that would be great and potentially a time savings for me. If you want to include any client-side scripts like roll-overs for the navigation buttons, that would be super cool. I will rely though on the PhotoShop file to make tweaks to the design and translate the design to the various pages I'll need throughout the site.

I hope that answers your question. "Coding" can be a bit vague. I'm hoping for PhotoShop file(s) I can use to implement and easily tweak the design.

Well there is a lot more to do than I thought, and the prize isn't enough in my situation. I'm determined to win this contest, but I don't think I will have time to do the slice and coding this time.

    That's fine.

    Here's what I suggest.

    1) Give me an example button. Is it a plain button or something that goes with your design.

    2) Give me your suggestion on what to do if the navigation bar isn't on the right. There would seem to be three simple solutions:

2a) stop the orange bar at the footer, it doesn't extend up and delete the blue navigation pane

2b) extend the orange bar up but delete the navigation pane

2c) extend the orange bar up, truncate the navigation pane by remove the rectangular portion on the right.

Seems simple enough to me. If it's too much work, then expect to submit the PhotoShop of your design and I'll handle the rest.

    Slider,
As I put more thought to it, this is a contest. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you are suppose the choose the entry with the best design, and as I have been told by a moderator in the past, custom modifications as you have asked for, are supposed to be made after the winner has been chosen. So therefore, my entry still stands. I don't want to start working again knowing that I may not be the winner, and I'd be doing work for nothing.

All updated and new entries will be found here, Dont forget to scroll down :

I'm also going to expand the homepage...giving you an area for news and latest-events section...Also what resolution are you going to have it be full screen? It think you should have it occupy the full screen in 800x600 but have a it be in the middle in 1280x760...Like "designcontest.net/forum" ...I'll come up with a few backgrounds that you would potentially use at 1280 resolution...Goodnight!

P.S I'll fine tune the colors once I have finished a satisfactory layout for all elements, unless you have any specific colors you'd like to see...

    From: http://www.designcontest.com/disclaimer.php
Contests are initially held for a maximum of two weeks. Each designer may submit up to three concepts to a contest. During the contest, the contest holder may provide feedback to the entrants and request revisions to the submitted concepts. After two weeks, the contest holder has the option of narrowing the contest down to five (5) concepts that he thinks are worthy of development, and extending the contest for two more weeks.

But Slider, those are concepts, what you are requesting are small modifications which can be easily made after the contest.

No, Axi. They are elements that are part of the design, things you felt weren't necessary to include and I should trust you'll deliver later after you are declared the winner. Unfortunately you've made the decision too easy.

aE-COma is the winner! Thank you very much for your design, your prompt entry, you're willingness to make revisions and your professional attitude. I look forward to finalizing this design with you and possibly working on a few other projects I have in the works.

Slider: While I understand where you are coming from with the revisions, this is a contest and we do ask that only major modifications are made. Things such as colours, fonts, font sizes, etc. should have no need to be modified and posted again.

These entries are not to be final products, and I don't think that Axi was entirely in the wrong.

Anyways, congratulations aE-COma! Please notify jlinds72 when the files have been sent so that you can receive your prize.

And we only get the prize money after the final product is completed with your satisfaction. So how will I cheat in this case? Anyways it's over, aE-COma, congrats!

We have a problem concerning the versions of our Photoshops...Slider has Photoshop 6 and I created the file in CS...He can't open the files because of some layer effects created in Photoshop Cs which can only be opened in Photoshop 7.01 and Photoshop CS...Does anyone have any ideas as to how to resolve this issue without him having to download large and posibly unneccasary files, trial versions etc.

I'm not on my computer that has Photoshop CS at the moment, so I can't double check and may be way off, but here's a shot. Illustrator CS allow you to save the file to "emulate" previous versions of the application, so it's possible that Photoshop offers that as well, but i'm not positive. If so, it would give you the option at the Save screen and is worth looking into at least.

Hopefully someone will either be able to confirm/deny this- or offer another suggestion for you.

flatten the layer effects so that he can't change them, but he can still open the file and make text changes, etc.

PSD files are compatible - but as you said its the effects that aren't. So again, select the layers that are connected with each other (effects wise) and then merge/flatten them together.

I'll suggest that, but I think he was interested in creating new buttons with layers using the blending options that I used. In fact, Slider requested a seperate file with the button. Anyhow, I'm sure we'll be able to work out something in the near future...I suggested that he download the trial version of Photoshop CS if is he has the time to do so...Thanks for the suggestions I'll send the Psd with flattened layers immediately.

I don't beleive Photoshop has that option since it was the first thing I checked when he said he got an error message when opening the PSD's, since most programs do have that (Word, Illustrator, etc). I also saved it under "Maimum Compababilty", anyhow, if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will corect me...Thanks for the advice though.
