    Black and White

I think having a community logo contest where all entries have to be black and white (not gray scale) would be a lot of fun. The logo could be for anything... I don't really have a topic in mind...

Working with just positive and negative space without all the drop shadows, gradients, and special effects, would be really cool.

to make sure this contest gets any interest from the community you should start with the topic and the brief. Creative work in the brief results in creative submissions. Take a look for example at Bloodless Energy Drink community Contest.
In my opinion just a logo in black in white is not enough to make an interesting community contest.

I will work on a complete topic and brief.

In the meantime... Here's a link to some very good black and white logos.

I am not saying that b&w logos are boring. all good logos should work in b&w. But we are talking about a topic for a community contest here.

I don't know I kinda like this idea. It'd kinda like getting back to basics and show what you can do w/ one color.

Thanks Coy. That really was my intention.

This is a design community, and in my opinion there is no better way to showcase your design ability then with a one-color design.

The best designs don't come from making things look cool by adding all kinds of bells and whistles, they are pure, simple, and clever.

i think that depending where the logo will be used, you can work with these positive and negative appearance. my personal opinion is that every logo should work perfectly in one color. you must see all the logos details in just one color independent of how many colors it originally has.

Interesting, but I think this contest would be very difficult to judge. If the Nike logo never existed and someone submitted it here, it would most likely not win although its one of the best logos of all time. It's very tricky to design the best yet the simplest logo because in a case like this, beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.

not a bad idea. black and white logo has also its own importance.rather many clients opt for logo which work both in black&white and color.

Black and white is not old school! At some point the client will always use a black and white version of a logo. If the logo you designed doesn't look good as black and white then you need to rethink the log you just designed.

Sometime a client will if not all client will put an ad in a newspaper and most will choose black and white, most reasons come down to cost.

I don't think those reasons ever turn into "old school"

B/W design is very basic. If you can't design in b/w, probably your color design is not too strong. Ability to express the idea with a minimum resorses is a nice challenge.

Logos with drop shadows and gradients are all smoke and mirrors... Flawless and simple creativity is worth so much more.

I support the idea. For me the "old school" is much more than saying and look at it, I'll freely say, with much more respect than the "new school" (whatever that means).
Actually, Reminds me on the following situation:
When you do not understand the music, just say "it's jazz." (Or "it's classic)

There has always been much more knowledge and effort needed to make something simple and meaningful than something complicated, colorful, it shines ...
Sounds like a paradox but it is so.

    So, go ahead Libby!

Shouldn't a truly well designed logo be able to stand on its own, print well in black and white, and cummunicate cleary without relying on color. I beleive that this concept poses a real challenge to develop something that is not just black and white but also good. That's just my humble opinion...although I may be a little bias since I love negative space
