Lets start with the good.

Its good that you are practicing and making stuff up. It helps the creative juices to flow.

I like the cross hairs, although i think you can probably do some better shading to give it more depth.

Now for the bad.

The image itself looks a little flat. I see maybe a little bevel? on it but this doesnt help.
Try and reshade it. Go back into the opacity mask and try and give it some more of a reflection/glare from the light sources.

I'd go back and look at a different choice of font.

Maybe a block serif font.

Not sure also about the stroke on the S in the cross hairs. I think i know why you did it but im sure there is another way to prevent the S from getting lost by the Red circle.

Maybe also put a texture on the metal of the scope.

These are just some suggestions/ideas.

Hope this helps!

Very eye catching in my opinion. I would make the greys more in contrast to each other and red a little brighter.
Other than that, very stylish work.

FMD thanks for the info. I'll work on some shading I wasn't pleased with them either and see how some other fonts look with it. I'll use this to practice some new techniques or techniques I've kind of avoided since I wanted to get a good handle on what I know, I think I'm there and need/have to get deeper into illustrator, and other tools. I've only scratched the surfes (so to speak).

kvasaclimited - thanks

You definitely have skills, but stick with the web 2.0 look. This one looks too 90ish to me.
