    Self Portait - Sort of

Hey guys, this is my first real post here. This looks like a great place to get feedback and the people here all seam really nice. Anyway, I'd just like to show you guys my current project and how it's coming along. I'll keep posting an updated version so you can see my process. I love constructive criticism so DON'T hold back...rip it apart . Essentially this is a self portrait with a twist. I wanted to put myself in the shoes of some sort of ranger(hardcore dnd player) just to spice it up. The previews are all at 50% size. So, without further adieu:

    Current:

Yeah, I figured I'd start just using the b/w brushes in photoshop to get the general shape down before I started adding color.

    We'll see how it goes.

    Great art but

    it is a little blurry.
When i try phtoshop i also get this smugy-blurry effect. Is there any pack of brushes for photoshop as good as corel painter has?

It's blurry because i'm still working on the shaping...it will be much sharper as I finish this piece. I'm putting on hold for the reptile contest though.

There are some really good brushes on the market and you can also creat your own. (although I never have) You can even find some free brushes.

For digital drawing and painting, I use Easy Paint Tool Sai, it has great pressure sensitive brushes and has great effects. You can try using that one if you're on Windows.

But for photoshop, this one's pretty good. It has so much detail!

Good start. How is your layer structure? You might wanna review some of the first layers in tighten up?

Definitely not bad. The shading is good. Add some more detail, esp. in the eyes, some more contrast, and maybe some texturing for the hoodie. A grungy, dark background might work.

That is looking really good so far.
The detail in the teeth and lips also under your eyes is very nice.
    I like it in B+W.

Make sure you post up the finished product. Good Job!

    Update

Hey guys...sorry it's been so long. I can't leave you hanging though. I've updated the image with added facial details. Cleared up some blurry areas and I'm back on track to finishing this piece. The background is not mine...just filler so I can see how it looks with a somewhat busy background. Also, this is the full size...figured I could show off some more detail. Thanks for all the replies!

I think it is coming along extremely well! The detail in the skin and hair, the tones, the lighting, everything seems to be coming along to a photo-realistic presence. I take it that the clothing is still being worked on, but it actually looks pretty cool like that as well (kinda reality meets art). My only quarrel is with the teeth now for some reason. It seems the rest of the facial features have so much realistic detail, yet the teeth are coming across as though they do not match that same amount of detail. Maybe sharpening the area up a little, and make the highlights a little less dominant and streaky?

    Great work!
