I don't have Corel Draw or great illustration programs. None in fact.

However, In the future, I hope to get them if I get some money together. However, the only logo idea I won with so far, I used Aesops fable idea of the race of the tortoise and the hare, and then tried to put that into a logo.

What I mean is that I was aiming at trying to get a widely known myth or story very visually recognizable into a logo. I drew it on Paint from accessories and retouched it on befunky.com (Free) :) But I agree with everyone who wrote. thinking about the brief, and researching it, and then sketching it out whether on computer or paper, are all fantastic ideas.

Designing logo proces:

1. Thinking, thinking, thinking, drinking coffe, thinking...
2. Write many terms conected with that what I am doing (it must be on papir)
3. Make sketch (it is very important to do that on papir)
4. Make preliminar B&W versions (max 3) in my lovely corel
5. When the B&W shape become good it is half job
6. Make color version if need
7. Make 3D model
8. Charge money

YUP!

I'd have to agree with this. Works all the time.

First of all, my english is not good. Sorry.
Absolutely first sketch out. Then the computer would do originals.
But the idea is very clear I would finalize the first time on the computer.

1) Research and thinking.
2) Sketching and visualizing every detail in my mind.
3) Start doing it on the computer and experiment with more ideas that come to mind.

I am able to sketch every detail of anything in my mind and see it in full 3D where applicable. I am also able to troubleshoot the design as well as think about the techniques I'm going to use to create it this way. It does a lot for me than paper has ever been able to do.

Not in all times but when i make a sketch in a paper it facilitate working and save time as you think in one step but if you don't do a sketch you think at every step for next step.

I think I'm still learning my style and what design process I like best. I find that after researching the client and deciding on a theme, I like jumping strait into the computer and start plugging away. After reading through others posts though, I can see there is a great benefit to sitting down and drawing out some creative ideas first. I think I'm going to try and start drawing first to help find a pointed design direction (plus I could use the hand drawing practice)

I never sketch on paper, but i think it's important to sketch first.
In my opinion ideas and inspirations are the best thing for good logo design, so i hope that every ch will provide at list one link for designer about what kind of design they like or want.

Good thread Xantov. personally go through several phases: 1 - Read and understand well the briefing. 2 - Search and inspire to formulate some ideas. 3 - sketching on paper to test some ideas. 4 - go to the computer, working to a single color. 5 - test sources or even draw them. 6 - test various colors or that are suggested. this process can be long and complex, but produces better results. is a matter of routine. good luck

Look around the web for some inspiration, carefully reading the brief and creating it straight on computer.

The initial draft is always done on paper and then apply on the computer. but varies from logo to logo. to be a sketch there must be a search. if lettring with a logo so it is obvious that there will not much research has now those more elaborate pesqisa there and see what fits in what we are asked and so yes it has to project on paper.
