Do we need guaranteed contests?

I'm not sure how long this site has been active, seeing as how I came across it maybe two months ago or so, but i would assume that the guaranteed contests would naturally progress to be dominant in the forums. It's not difficult to see the increased response and quality of work in those threads that appear most honest.
Perhaps this site has been active for some time now with little progress in that respect, so implementing guaranteed contests administratively may be necessary.

Even prescreening designers doesn't work, on designoutpost there is i think only like 2 - 3 dominant designers on there. And alot of the ppl there prolly should've made the cut. That may also happen here as well.

Let me summarise your opinions:
1. We need Guarantee contests
2. We don't want to pressure contest starters to pre-paid the price
3. We don't want to be ripped off
4. Beginners want their chance to build up their portfolio
5. We don't want a few ppl to dominate the contests
I'm thinking if we run the majority of contests guaranteed, contest starters won't take non-guarantee contest for granted, and we won't need to go around and ask ppl to deposite the price money, hopefully this will solve points 1 2 and 3. We can open a public non-guarantee forum for beginners and those who are building up their portfolio. thus the whole contest section will look something like below:
Logo Design Contests (guaranteed)
Website Design Contests (guaranteed)
Flash Design Contests (guaranteed)
Miscellaneous Design Contests (guaranteed)
Non-profit oranisation/Low-Cash Prizes Contests (guaranteed)
Public Design Contests (non-guaranteed, open to all members)
I can't however think of a solution to 5, allowing more designers to join the team doesn't stop top designers from dominating the contests, can try lowering the pre-screen threshold e.g. allow ppl with 5 designs in their portfolio to join the design team. OR limit participation of contest winners (e.g. contest winners won't be allowed to participate in the same forum for two weeks after their win). What do you think?

simplistik, I got this impression that you were against pre-screening coz you were concerned that it would encourage domination. And now you're suggesting portfolios should be looked at carefully and critically to bring up the standard, isn't that what designoutpost is doing? i.e. pre-screening?Even prescreening designers doesn't work, on designoutpost there is i think only like 2 - 3 dominant designers on there. And alot of the ppl there prolly should've made the cut. That may also happen here as well.
and phacker, I understand you don't want DC.net to turn into designoutpost in the way they restrict participation to prescreened applicants, what can we do to bring in higher level designers? or do you prefer DC.net to stay as it is?
btw, I think both of you are very good designers, I love some of the works you guys have posted and I respect your opinions,
as well as all other members' please share your thoughts.

I think everyone should have the opportunity to participate... all we ask is they show some seriousness and submit a portfolio. If that's too much work then they should not bother being here.
DC needs people that can read directions and care about their designs. So many people on here can't even comprehend simple instructions by the clients.
