I use Bryce 5, Poser 4, Terragen, AutoCAD 2000, and SketchUp 3. I also use photoshop for texturing and some heightfield production. All depending, of course, on the application. I've got a friend who uses Max and is very good at it, but I've never used it. Check out my 3D Imagery link below for some sample work. Post a link to your stuff too...I'd love to see it.

Frozen Lake was done in terragen. You should download it and all the plugins - its free and its fun! Also, check out RENDEROSITY.COM for lots of inspiration! Good luck.

I use 3D Studio Max 6, Lightwave 3D and Maya ... As far as one being harder than the other .. Once you learn how to use the tools, what modifiers do what, etc. Other 3D Sfotwares are fairly easy to use and understand.
Discreet's Max 5 was used to make the Final Fantasy movie .. textures created in Photoshop .. Max, Maya and Lightwave are all very powerful stand alone packages for 3D work .. I do find myself using Max more often though. Possibly because it is what I was taught on in college.

I use Lightwave (and Messiah)....faithfully. The big mistake most new guys make is jumping app to app. While I can boast for LW's power. Most apps pretty much do the same. Stick with max. Although I must say from a standpoint of having had worked at a few studios Max is losing its grip. But the theory is still the same from app to app. Learn your app to the best of your ability and you will be able to port your skills over.

I agree with deepixel. Choose it and use it. If you do anything, become an expert at one 3D package. You've heard the saying "Jack of all trades, master of none."...
