I think export its not good enough. I usually save the corel file to corel10 version, then I open it in Illustrator & save as AI file. It works better than you export to AI directly.

I uses Coreldraw as the main software because I learned Coreldraw before I knew Illustrator. I more familiar with basic drawing tools like pen & bezier tools. The difficulties to export Coreldraw to AI usually if in the design there are gradient color and transparency.

Altough most of the CorelDRAW's users works on only one layer, Illustrator will divide each object as a separate layer (similar to the Object Manager of CorelDRAW). So, you don't need to create special layers. And about Color Swatches, Illustrator don't creates it automatically, but you can generate it on the Swatches palette and choose "Add used colors" on the menu. That works fine of you save as Illustrator (don't save as v.8.0, use a newest version) and as PDF

best regards

If you need to work with layer, go to Tools/object manager and create all layer you need. Each object will be stored in the layer you select. Illustrator will preserve all the layers from CorelDRAW. And, when you export as Illustrator, select the rigth version, not Illustrator 8 as defaut

Each version of Corel Draw has the option of keeping the document as AI file, I have more supporters with EPS file type, because it opens in the AI also, and lines within the artwork when scaling does not deform. personally I like to combine work in Corel Draw and Adobe Illustrator, and more use EPS files

You can just export your work in EPS file format from Corel Draw and open in Illustrator, or drag and drop, Illustrator will open your work. The EPS file format is good because no problem with scailing fonts, styles, lines and other. The EPS file format is a good for logos if you haven´t the font and because he is a small size, you can use this file anywhere.
