I am thinking of using Carbonmade, the limit doesn't bother me as I don't want to put too much stuff up there. You can always swap around your best/worse stuff anyway and who wants to see more than that anyway?

what do you think about uploading some pics on photobucket.com? I thought, that should be enough, to call it a "portfolio"...in my opinion that´s way too much stress - only to take part in some design contests! It´s like: "you´ve gotta do this, you´ve gotta do that first..." - actually I´m pretty much tired of this...I´m just a hobby freelancer trying to get some input and learn from others!

Regardless of whether you are posting just to gain access to the contests, you are a graphic designer are you not? And it's pretty much common knowledge that any graphic designer worth their grain of salt will have a portfolio. Who cares if it is too much stress? You are the one who picked your path to work with graphics and this is just part of it. Don't complain about what you supposedly love to do. And no, uploading photos on photobucket isn't good enough to be a portfolio (IMHO). If you are serious, you will design your own portfolio.

I also wanted to add that I currently use GoDaddy. It's cheap and easy to use. Just make sure you upgrade to the option to not have ads. I forgot to and unfortunately my site just looks tacky while I'm waiting for the upgrade to take place, ugh!

Great idea. I stickied this thread. Hopefully the question will come up much less often now :)

Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket
Not technically a portfolio site, but good free image hosting. Limit on image dimensions is the only thing I'm aware of. Can create albums, sub-albums, etc.

Would website design count as part of the portfolio as well as the designs present with the company

There is a previous social network of MySpace, Orkut (from Google), that you can share just the album that you want. That may work www.orkut.com

Blogger or wordpres probably the best because you can blog your designs and also better exposure because you can alter the looks of you blog to look like a pro website of a designer.
