I'm not sure if I would survive without my laptop. I'm the type that can't sit in one place and design for more than a few hours. I'm constantly moving around my house and even to Coffee shops and Parks to change up my scenario.

It's also almost a necessity being in school as well.

Setup:
MacBook Pro 17" High Resolution Screen
2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 Gb Ram

when im at home, i prefer using my desktop PC, for me it's much more comfortable to use than a laptop. but when i'm outside the house & needed to finish a design entry, i have no choice than to use laptop rather than going to the computer shops. :D:D:D

80% of the time I am operating under OSX.
20% of the time I run XP via BootCamp for apps like AutoCad and Rhino.

I would prefer a Desktop over the laptop unless required by me and a couple of fellow designs who seek for creative space and ambience. The Desktop surely gives you a lot more freedom for adding multiple gadgets and with the painfree process of carrying it with you and unplugging the cables. Laptop surely is a better option when you are no the move and for presentation purposes.

I use an iMac 20" and generally prefer desktops. Laptops are cool for traveling, but for creative work a big screen is very very helpful!

I use a Gateway M285 TabletPC. It's not quite the powerhouse I'd like, but it can hold its own. I really like the option of using my stylus directly on the screen, which swivels and lays flat. I seldom have to bring my Wacom tablet home with me! :-)

Intel Centrino Duo (dual core)
1.66 GHz
2GB RAM
80 GB HD (almost full!)
CD/DVD burner
17" screen

At work, I dock it and have a 24" widescreen HP monitor.

I personal, computers and laptops have an important role, so I use it both.
laptop, useful to handle work outside the Office. but computers can be better and quickly handle work.
I spend a lot of time to work on my computer.

I just wanted to say that I'm happy for all the advice. I'm currently using a laptop and it's on it's last leg and I been deciding if I want another laptop or a Desktop. My husband and I been thinking about getting a Desktop but at the same time I do travel a lot and like to work in any room of the house.

I would prefer desktop with a high-end specs. Because its hard for me to design on laptop. Laptop is just an optional for me, for example if I had a project and needed it to done as soon as possible but I was in out of town, so the best solution is to work on laptop, because laterally you can bring it anywhere. :)

So my advice go for the assembled desktop computer.

I have 2 desktop computers (G5 tower and iMac G5) as well as a MacBook Pro laptop. I mostly design on desktops, but I'm glad I have my laptop. Last week, we had a horrible lightning/thunderstorm which unfortunately zapped my internet modem even though everything is surge protected. No internet access for a while - uggh! I was able to take my laptop to Starbucks and utilize their free wifi. I bought my 2 desktops brand new, but I did get my laptop on eBay for a decent price.

Laptop is kinda useful if you have a problem with your desktop. So its like a backup plan. Its low weight and u can work any where. Its not so powerful as pc but it can do the job.
