An external flash is a piece of equipment add-on that makes a source for strong light. It could add light to pictures taken with a digital camera. External flash units are not attached permanently to the camera. In the digital cameras beginner level, external flashes are built into cameras, and usually turn on automatically when additional light is needed. The external flash has its batteries separate, and fits through slot on the top the camera.
