1. Knowing the moon’s phases
the shadow our earth casts on the moon is moving continuously to the left. When the moon is full, the shadow reappears again on the right side.
2. Using the Right Equipment
To take successful moon shots, you need the right equipment such as
• zoom lens to get a close up shot, and use focal length of minimum
•A tripod to support the large lens weight and allow the slow shutter speeds
•A shutter release to enable firing the shutter without depressing the shutter button.
3. Good Exposure
Try not to overexpose the moon so it doesn’t come out plain white. Turn down the exposure compensation, or you can use the camera’s spot metering mode.
4. Right Time and Place
Try shooting when sky glows faintly when the sun goes down

Thanks for the tips. I've been taking photos of the moon lately and these will come in handy. I was looking at the moon through a telescope just last night and thinking how great it would be to have one with a camera.

and it might also be a good idea to use a neutral density filter
