there are many ideas you can be really creative here, some totems are done from animals ,or can be from faces, masks, see what the client wants, typical totem is with kind of wings, bird on the top.but you can make it kind of modern look too,put the things on it whatever you like,if you havent any ideas, use search take a look on some totems,i am sure it will come some ideas for you.

Why don't you try to search for "totem pole" in Google images for example. You will get to see many poles and some may inspire you for your cartoon one...

Who is your client? Depending on who its for, you could use different associated layers.
Usually, the layers are like monster faces or native animals, like a moose, racoon, beaver, eagle, buffalo etc. But say your client was, for example say like a dental office , eahc character on the pole could have something to do with a dentistry; someone brushing their teeth, a giant tooth, dentists face with his mask and headlamp on.
All in the style of the native theme...thick black lines with lots of blood reds, deep yellows, blues, greens and white.

It may not work depending on your client but its an idea!

You might want to check into Mayan art for a bit of inspiration.

INstead of deleting your message. Just wanted to point out how useless bringing up a thread from 2 years ago is.

I mean the person that posted this hasn't been on since 7/2008 and really don't think you posting about his totem pole will be of any help. if they haven't done it by now they never will.

PEOPLE I'd really like you to think about what you are posting to before posting.
