Hey all well i am looking to start my own website.. I am not positive what i want it to be as of this moment.. I want to either create a Delta Force or Call Of Duty tournament site or a graphic design site.. If i dont do either of these i will most probably create a website for and about me...

By creating this site i want tips on what i should do first:
: Buy Webspace
: Create Template

Hope u can help out...

I always get the webspace first becasue your design can change depending on what domain name you get.

If you meant webspace by hosting account, then do template first. :-)

It's a good practise to make a plan for your website before you start designing your template. I would work out the structure of the website first, there are three basic types of structures, linear / hierarchy and network, most website uses combination of at least two. Think about which part of the website should be linear, which part should should be hierarchy.

It always useful to draw a tree diagram of all the nodes(pages) and think about how you would join them together? Make sure there are no endless loops in your structure so users don't lose their sense of navigation. This tree diagram will help you understand your mental model of the website, in other words how you think your website will work, now you need to think about it in the users point of view and refine your diagram.

You may think "why waste time doing all these, I've got them all in my head", well if you are doing a 10 pages website, I suppose most brain can handle that, nevertheless, the diagram will help you to make rational decisions when you are designing your template. e.g. if you have 15 navigation buttons on one level, how would you position them? how would you position them differently if you only had 5? If you have a long sequence of linear nodes, would you consider to present them in a frame page to reduce disturbances caused during page transitions, and include a progress bar indicating where the users are in the sequence?

Finally, one practical advice: get your domain name and hosting account at the same place, some company charges handling fees for domain name transfer and it can take days. I know it is the case in the UK.

if you search around there are quite a few hosting business trying to get on their feet right now and offer very reasonable prices, also i noted your into gaming, i saw a host that if you rent a game server with them they give you webspace and a domain. so if your making a gaming site then that'd be ideal. i got a couple of links for you. but just look around there's plenty of hosts with reasonable prices that have good service.
