How the heck do people draw some of these characters or items that I see in vector based illustrator graphics. Like alot of the logos I see people making here.
Freehand, scanning and the path tool or?

Sketch it, scan it, the use the pen tool to design it.

If I have a picture of something that I want to turn into an illustration, I open it in photoshop, apply quite a high contrast to it, then go >> Image >> Adjustments >> Posterize, and enter either 3 or 4. This should then give you a simplified image which I then import into illustrator and trace.

Illustrator is just like Photoshop, minus airbrushing and all that jazz. Tools work almost the same, it's not hard to learn at all. But if you make your logos at 300-600 dpi then you should be fine in PS as well.

currently I make them at 300dpi, maybe I should bump it up to 600?
Also Im getting more of a feel for illustrator, but I find my self trying to find the paint can a lot lol and trying to use the marquee tool to select a image and delete or trim it down.
It's the simple things I think thats throwing me off course.
But like they say practice makes perfect!

If you ask 10 different Illustrator users, you'll get 10 different theories and practices.
You will come into your own with time.
I think the pen tool is key when working with illustrator. Get a good understanding of how it works and you will be enlightened. Good Luck
