Just curious as to who still uses tables, and who has moved on to using CSS to create their layouts.

It recently became apparent to me that CSS was the new way to go, so I spent
the past few days to learn how. It turned out to be amazingly easy to learn since I had prior CSS knowledge, and I find it is much better than tables.

Also, have any of you decided to create only strictly XHTML compliant websites? That is apparently the new thing as well.

Anyways, just wanted to get some opinions on all this. I am currently redoing my website in CSS/XHTML, and while it is a big change I think it is almost necessary to compete with the many websites on the net.

Yeah I seem to be using CSS more and more lately. To redo a whole site, no, at least not yet for me. Complete CSS/XHTML doesn't display properly in most browsers, mostly older versions. I think its really easy to code in, but I'm just so used to spending hours making a layout look right with tables, lol:) Sometime in the near future (next year maybe) I'll probably be making mostly CSS layouts:)

Nothing but CSS and XHTML for me.

To hell with the 4% of the people out there using moldy browsers, I say. :D

And to respond to your questions...

CSS is definitely better than using tables. Faster render of the page and smaller file size, on average.

I have followed W3C's recommendations for XHTML. I know it's kind of the 'new thing' lately. However, the XHTML 1.0 standard has been a recommendation since 2000. XHTML 1.1 since 2001. It's a new thing because web designers are now hearing the buzz and realizing the benefits of using XHTML/CSS.

As for competition, well, I suppose it depends on who you are showing. If you have someone who is adamant about having their layout look the same on dirty old Netscape browsers, then it might be a tough sell. But...i think for the majority of us web designers, it shows us that you took the time to follow recommeded standards and are following best practises. That's how I feel, anyways.

I am still using tables all the way.. just coz I don't really feel like digging into css totaly, I know the main things in css (background, text align, text decoration) but haven't gone any further than that.. Maybe I should actually try it out some time

1. Yes CSS
2. Yes xhtml
3. Yes compliant
4. I like the css validator at WDG (Web Design Group) much better than the one at W3C. http://www.htmlhelp.com/reference/css/
4. I use html Tidy to validate the xhtml. I have the Tidy program from Source Forge on my machine, but I use the built in Tidy with HTML Kit which is my text editor. HTML Kit is also a free program that was initially built through Source Forge. I love it! One of the big features is that it colorizes my code. In addition to being a text editor, it also has an FTP uploader. Check it out Bird!

Hey....just want to say thanks for the link to WDG css validator. I thought my style sheet was lean and mean. Thanks to that validator, I made it even 'meaner' than it was before. Still gives me warnings about using 'em' for font-sizes for IE 3.x, but people using that browser probably already think the web is a crappy place to see, visually speaking. :D

thx again.
