i think uve got a good start, as far as where u want everything placed, but i do have a few suggestions to improve them..
1. select fonts that go with the design... u seem to like the whole right angle design, which is ok, but then stick with fonts that are mostly right angles, not the font u used for the header.. also, for filler text, use a font that u can actually use in a website's text, like arial, verdana, times, etc.
2. spice up the site! add some stock photos perhaps behind where it says Design-Contest.. or make the site more 3d using gradients and whatnot..
3. dont rely on just boxes and lines... try adding some rounded corners, 45 degree angles, etc.. it adds a lot to the site..
4. eliminate the black borders where two boxes meet.. take, for instance, the top left corner where the two purple boxes meet.. i think it would look better if u deleted that black line where the meet, so that it looks like two connect boxes, rather than two next to eachother..

i see that u are learning, and with a few more tutorials and whatnot, u should be better in no time! good luck with this layout! :)

I hardly recommend you too remove that Bevel and Emboss.
Otherwise #1 is best.

Out of those two, I'd say one. I think you need to change the color from purple to a deep blue or light blue; either one goes good with gray. Just keep on working on the site and the colors should hopefully come to you.
Looking for a Flash/Graphics Designer with a lot of expierience? PM me and we'll talk!

Number 1 all the way, much better color. Number 2 looks "washed out".
