I think we should have a new forum for rants, because I have one right now.
Today someone applied for the design team and wasn't accepted.
His "portfolio" was comprised of two templates and he had "contributed" a whopping 10 posts to this community.

I thought his use of graphics in his templates were great... I wonder how ready he would be to buy graphics for a contest that he may or may not win? Now, before someone tells me about all the royalty free sites, they better go and read the royalty free license. Most sites that have graphics that are worth a darn are lately licensing them only for use in display. If they are to be used for commercial purposes they must be purchased by the site that is going to use them.

I also wondered how ready he would be to do umpteen million revisions for a contest when he wasn't willing to put together a decent portfolio for the committee... yes Committee ... to judge?

This person's attitude on finding that he wasn't accepted showed me that it was a good thing that no one... that's right no one ... voted to let him on the team. He is definitely not a team player.

Design team members are chosen by 1) their skill and 2) their contribution to DC net as a community member. To a lesser extent, they are chosen by their ability to read and follow rules.

So why am I ranting? Because Penguin closed the thread too early. I would have liked to have the opportunity to direct my comments to this person.

You may or may not be reading this, but if you are now you know why we declined to admit you for now. Because of your ill-temper, I am now inclined to vote no again if you submit another application, regardless of what kind of portfolio you have!

My two-bits worth.

This seems like an appropriate place to rant :)

As far as the applicant/application goes - I am not posting any comments. But I am going to say that I closed the topic because I didn't want the problem to further escalate past the point it already had, at least not in the applications forum.

But since anything goes in The Hangout.... rant away and discuss this issue, the topic won't be closed ;)

Heh, that's the only reason I haven't submitted my application yet, not sure if I'm being friendly/active enough yet :p

I might put it up sometime this week though....

That was sort of off-topic, but life is going pretty good right now so no need to rant.. yet ;)

Right on topic, IMO, jag :)

You have quite an interesting home page. I can't wait to see the rest of the site!

Oh pooh, where did the rascally rabbit run off to?

No offense intended, there was another member here who's name was Derek, too. Haven't seen him around for awhile :(

I have to say that his rants about "who cares so long as the client gets what he wants" really touch a nerve with me...

I was recently accepted to Design Outpost and have been doing stuff there for a couple of weeks, and I have to say that for the client it has to be an immensely superior experience compared to something like sitepoint or WHT. Why? Because there are no people posting their 20-second Photoshop-with-a-bad-font-and-worse-layer-effects entries to the competition. These kind of posters just clog up the thread and make it so that the more experienced designers don't want to deal with the influx of crap that they have to wade through to see feedback on a design that actually took some thought and effort. Which isn't to say that teamless design isn't good...it has to exist so that fresh designers can do some portfolio building before moving on to bigger, better things. In fact, DO just accepted a designer that, in my opinion, doesn't meet the standards put forth by the other designers, and it's already having a negative effect on my experience visiting there.

Professionalism and quality of work are the most important things to a site like this, because DC will be trading its name on the quality of its designers. To be picky about who is accepted to the design team isn't just important, it's the most important thing for a site that wishes to have a lofty reputation to do. That goes for professionalism in communication as well as in design. If you are the kind of person who would rant and rave at the design committee because they didn't accept you based on their pre-established guidelines, then you do not yet have the degree of professionalism required to be a member of the design team. It's about a lot more than just a single template that you think looks cool.

First of all, you should know that posts in this forum aren't going to increase your count. j

Although this is the "Hang-Out" and anything goes (as Penguin said earlier), a comment out of context like this is frivolous and a waste of bandwidth, IMO.
What doesn't look like a good idea? The topic we are discussing or jag's site or the fact that Derek isn't who I thought he might be?

If you have something to say, then say it so all can understand your point. Otherwise you are better off not saying anything at all!

Even though I have no clue what this post is in regards to as I haven't been here very long, in my opinion and experience involving game design and business ethics, it's highly critical to ensure that those who are chosen to represent a company whether it be graphics creation or member interaction personnel act in a completely professional manner and represent the company as a combined entity. The work and attitude put forth from said members of a staff team reflect greatly on a company, and that's one of the most important things in business; positive representation and a professional attitude...*Shrugs*...Just posting my thoughts and such. Accept them as you will. :)
