Your best bet is to stick with very neutral colours. Nothing too bright, nothing too dark.

In my portfolio, I chose to use blue and white with a hint of green.

For my portfolio, I went a different direction: most of it is stark white, but I have accents of incredibly vivid color. It's not a design that would work for every occasion, but I think it worked all right for me (http://www.mbleigh.com/design/)

Yes, different is good - in some cases. If you want to see a bad usage of it check out my portfolio www.sanctumstudios.com.

I'm still not sure what happened when I designed it, maybe I was tired or something ;)

If you're not sure what colors to use, blue is always a safe bet...

Any color is a good color if it's used right. Now if you don't know much about color combination and other such topics...

Easy colors to make look good are these: blue, white, red
Just don't use anything real bright without a good contrast or you'll have you visitors blinking twice and clicking back.

David - it's like brown orange...:p
