Elance. Worth it?

I have been looking seriously at Elance and considering signing up for a one or three month subscription... but before I do it I want to make sure that I will at least get enough work to pay for the subscription costs

If anyone knows more about it or has tried Elance I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts on it and whether or not you think my work is good enough to be competitive...

The basic idea behind it is that you pay a certain amount of money each month and then are able to bid on design projects. Check out the site www.elance.com and it should give you some more information

Looking at it - I would say no. It seems as though its just a big marketing scheme, and out of the thousands of providers listed, I doubt you would be noticed by anyone.

Just my thoughts, if you are looking for a free designer listing, check out http://www.designfirms.org. I am listed there, and I get about 100 hits a month. Not much, but it is still something.

Then again... I suppose it wouldn't hurt to spend $5 and register for a month.

Why pay that much to get work? Try Rent-a-coder or ScriptLance. I like RAC best because the clients have to escrow the money up front, although they charge 15% and some of their rules are pretty strict. Scriptlance charges less, but the auctions are open and there isn't a whole lof of support that I can see.

I have never tried RAC, but scriptlance is just ridiculous - there are people that bid $5 on $200 projects, and while someone may not accept the $5 bid, they are still not going to hire the professional that will charge $200.

I take back everything I said above about ScriptLance - surprisingly I won a bid today after checking it for a second time, and I wasn't even the lowest bidder. LOL

I've won a couple of jobs on scriptlance, but all in all, I have not been very impressed with it. As you mentioned before, there are lot of ridiculously low bids. I don't know how anyone can afford to work for those rates. And the typical M.O. is to demand mock-ups before choosing a winner. Basically, you end up working for free. I've never tried elance. I'd be interested to hear what else is working for people. And what hasn't worked.
