I just bought the Machine Wash filters off of http://www.mrretro.com and I have to say that I'm pretty pleased with the results...I think it's got some great effects in there.

Anyone have some good links to tutorials etc. on making retro-style sites, signs, whatever? Also anything about doing distressed images/worn/aged. I've found some things but I would like to find a lot more.

well honestly i dislike filters due to well to many people try to use them while designing, so far all i can tell is that this filter makes it older..

why not just grab some brushes and do it by hand, you get way more satisfaction out of it not?

Link me to some brush sites :)

I'm pretty happy with it. I'm not really going to be doing distressed all that often, and I wanted a quick and easy way to do it. Worth the money in my opinion.

well, i don't have any links offhand due to the fact that i use preinstalled adobe brushes, because there are plenty in there and they work wonders.

also mbleigh can you show us some pics with this filter applied if i like it, i may purchase it as well.

the only thing i need right now is eurostile, eurostyle download, its a very nice font that is worth a look, but requires a commercial purchase.

I have eurostile but I seldom use it. If you'd like I can send it to you. :)

Eurostile is a pretty good font, but it's not quite round enough for me if I wanted to use a font of that type.

one of the problems I see with using those vector things from them is the fact they limit the size to 150x150. as with the pluggie it would be just about as quick to do with a brush. just my 2c's

I don't use filters cause i like to edit by hand and have total control iam not against filters though. Some 'retro' filters could be pretty usefull cause it's a lot of work to create every retro dot/scratch/torn/stain etc yourself.

From the examples i've seen on the site, iam not really fond of these filters. They are pretty nice for the centers, but they are pretty dull effects and most work still is in the edges which are left totally untouched by these filters.

Before&After magazine (www.bamagazine.com) has an article "Type destruction kit" in the March 2004 issue. The method uses the eraser tool and the Dry Brush (#39) set at 75% Opacity. It recommends starting with a brush size about half the type height. (Their examples just use type). Then you "wear away your image by click, click, clicking." Different brush sizes and erasing styles produce different looks.
  • Erase sparingly
  • Gradually build up worn areas
  • Don't drag the eraser
It also tells how to use "old colors" by starting with a bright color and then using the Hue/Saturation adjustment to reduce saturation and increase Lightness.
Also "let the background through" by lowering the opacity of the image or changing the layer mode to multiply. You can add some texture to the background color with the Noise filter.

I haven't tried this myself. The examples look good with type, but I think your filter might be better for a large image.

Btw do you maybe have screenshots of the plugin options? Or aren't there any? Iam wondering cause i've seen some good samples on another site and $32 is nothing, especially not if it lets you play with the settings a bit. Iam still not a filter fan, but i might better judge this item AFTER i bought it (which is when there indeed are adjustable settings).
